Should Your Small Business Try a Four-Day Workweek in 2026?

For a lot of small businesses, yes — and the data backs it up more than you'd expect.

The largest study yet on the four-day workweek followed almost 2,900 employees across 141 companies in six countries for six months. Revenue held steady or rose slightly, turnover dropped 57%, and nearly 70% of employees reported less burnout.
It's not just a one-time result. Earlier trials found similar patterns, and 93% of U.S. managers now say they support the idea for their own team.

The honest caveat: it works best in roles measured by outcomes, not hours on the clock — client work, service delivery, marketing, professional services. Hourly and shift-based roles are a harder fit. The businesses that saw success treated it as a real pilot: one team, a set timeframe, clear expectations, and regular check-ins.

How Can You Protect Your Small Business From AI Deepfake Scams?

Short answer: verify anything unusual — a payment request, a credential change, a wire transfer — through a second channel before you act. Call the person back on a number you already have, not the one that just called you.

Here's why that matters now more than ever: AI-generated voices and video have gotten good enough to fool trained employees. In one widely reported case, an employee at a global engineering firm authorized $25 million in transfers after joining a video call where every other person on screen was an AI-generated fake of a real colleague.

The good news?

You don't need a big security budget to protect against this. A callback habit, a two-person approval rule for payments, multi-factor authentication, and a little team training go a long way.

Is AI Actually Helping Small Businesses Make More Money in 2026?

Short answer: yes, if you're actually using it — and using it with a plan.

Key Points:
• 68% of small businesses now use AI regularly, up from 48% in mid-2024 (Intuit QuickBooks)

• 43% of AI users say it directly increased revenue; only 2% say it hurt them

• AI users are 2.3x more likely to report revenue growth than non-users (U.S. Chamber of Commerce)

• Top three uses: marketing content, customer communication, and admin tasks

• Adoption isn't the same as strategy. Pick 1-2 time-consuming tasks and build a process there first

New data from Intuit's 2026 AI Impact Report shows 68% of small businesses now use AI regularly, and 43% say it's directly increased their revenue (only 2% say it's hurt them). The U.S. Chamber of Commerce found AI users are 2.3 times more likely to report revenue growth than businesses that haven't adopted it yet.

Here's the catch: a lot of that growth comes down to reclaiming ordinary time. The top uses small businesses report are marketing content, customer communication, and admin work. Free up hours on those tasks and redirect them, and revenue tends to follow.

Many owners say they still don't feel fully confident using AI tools well, which tells us adoption and strategy are two different things.

Our take: pick one or two time-consuming tasks and build a simple process around AI there before trying to do everything at once.

Are Small Business Loan Rates Finally Going to Drop in 2026?

Some relief is likely — but don't expect a dramatic drop anytime soon.

The Fed held its benchmark rate at 3.50%–3.75% in July, but earlier this year signaled two more cuts are likely before the end of 2026. When the Fed moves, small business loan rates usually follow, just not all at once and not for every borrower.

Right now bank loans are running roughly 6.3%–11.5%, SBA loans 10%–14%, and online lenders anywhere from about 18% up to 45%+ depending on risk.

The part worth knowing: existing fixed-rate loans don't change when the Fed cuts. It mostly helps variable-rate credit lines and anyone taking out a new loan later in the year.

How Much Should Your Small Business Keep in an Emergency Fund?

The general guideline: three to six months of operating expenses set aside. Go toward six months if your revenue swings seasonally, three if it's steady and predictable.

Here's why that cushion matters right now.

Recent Federal Reserve data shows about half of small businesses are dealing with uneven cash flow, and a similar share say they've struggled to cover normal operating expenses in a given month. Business optimism has improved in 2026, but uncertainty is still running well above its historical average, so cash flow bumps aren't going away anytime soon.

The good news: you don't need the full six months saved before it's worth having. Start with two to four weeks if that's realistic, keep it in a separate account so it doesn't blend into everyday cash flow, and set up an automatic transfer each pay cycle instead of hoping there's something left over.

We walk through the full math and how to actually build the habit on the blog:

Does Your Small Business Need an AI Usage Policy?

Short answer: yes, and probably sooner than you think. If anyone on your team is using ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini for work, even casually — it's worth having a simple written policy in place.

Here's why it matters now: small businesses picked up AI tools fast, but most never got around to writing down the rules. That's created "shadow AI”, staff using tools that were never formally approved, often free versions with weaker protections around your data and your clients' data.

New regulations are catching up too, from the EU AI Act to a growing number of US state disclosure laws. None of this means you need a 20-page legal document.

Most small businesses can cover the basics on one page: which tools are approved, what information should never be typed into an AI tool, and when a human needs to double-check AI-assisted work before it goes out the door.

We break down exactly how to build that one-pager, starting with the easiest first step, on the blog:

Does Your Team Actually Trust AI at Work?

Short answer: probably less than your adoption numbers suggest.

89% of small businesses now use AI in some form, up from just 36% in 2023. Looks great on paper. But new survey data tells a different story about how employees actually feel: 45% worry that "too much AI" could hurt their company's reputation, and 3 in 10 admit they act more enthusiastic about it around coworkers than they really are.

That's not really about the technology. It's about trust — and how a tool gets introduced matters just as much as which tool you pick.

The good news: this is fixable without a big formal policy. Explain why you chose a tool, ask the team actually using it whether it fits their workflow, and build in real training instead of expecting people to figure it out solo. Teams that get a say tend to adopt new tools faster and grumble a lot less.

How Much Can Your Small Business Now Borrow From the SBA?

Big news out of the SBA: as of July 4, 2026, small businesses can now access up to $10 million in combined financing — double the old cap — by pairing a 7(a) loan with a 504 loan.

Here's the honest version: this mostly matters if your growth plans involve real estate or major equipment. For businesses with five or fewer employees, the average 7(a) loan is still just around $377,000, and only about 7% of borrowers ever get past $2 million. For most everyday borrowing — inventory, staffing, a seasonal cash bridge — nothing really changes.

But if you're a manufacturer, contractor, or growing business eyeing a new facility or a big equipment purchase alongside working capital needs, this new structure gives you real room to work with. The SBA also waived guarantee fees for manufacturers this year and added $50 million in training grants to support them.

Worth a conversation with an SBA-approved lender if a major expansion is on your radar for 2026.

How Much Should Your Small Business Invest in AI in 2026?

Short answer: there's no fixed number, but the data says most businesses are wise to move cautiously rather than chase every new tool.

A new Business.com survey found 57% of small businesses are now investing in AI, up from 36% just two years ago — and it's paying off, with employees saving an average of 5.6 hours a week. But over half of small business leaders call themselves "careful evaluators," not early adopters, and many workers say they worry about over-relying on the technology.

Our advice: treat AI like any other tech investment. Set a modest budget tied to your overall technology spending, start with one low-cost tool, and measure the actual time or money it saves before expanding further.

What does it take to win a $50,000 grant after being turned down twice?

Curucaye stepped in with a combination of accounting support, administrative process, and leadership coaching. We took over accounts payable and receivable, payroll through Gusto, tax prep, and bookkeeping in QuickBooks Online, and built a financial plan the CEO could actually use to make decisions. We also coached the CEO on stepping back from daily tasks to focus on leading the business.

Before that, the CEO of this East Coast event planning company had been running the business and its back office single-handedly — payroll, expenses, day-to-day finances — and it caught up with them in a big way: a competitive grant application denied twice because the financial records behind it weren't solid.

The result: a third grant application, backed by accurate financial records, and a win. Plus faster reporting, less on the CEO's plate, and systems built to scale.
