Cloud vs. server-based EHR: which is right for your practice?
There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but here are the honest tradeoffs:
☁️ Cloud-based EHR
1. Lower upfront cost, subscription model
2. Automatic updates & backups
3. Access from any device, anywhere
4. Vendor manages IT security
5. Internet-dependent (have a backup plan)
🖥 Server-based (on-premise) EHR
1. Higher upfront hardware cost
2. Full data control on your own servers
3. Works without internet connectivity
4. Requires in-house or contracted IT support
5. Manual update & backup responsibility
For most small independent practices today, cloud-based wins on cost and convenience. But practices in rural areas with unreliable internet, or those with strict data sovereignty requirements, may still prefer on-premise.
The most important question isn't "which is popular?" it's "which fits how my practice actually works?"
