In honor of tonight’s UFC fights, I get a chance to throw it back to some of the biggest gut-check days of my life.

I was young, fresh out of night school, looking for an outlet, and I found it in a small boxing gym run by a legend in our area, Iks Stafford. He passed away a few years ago, but he was a great man who challenged me every time I saw him. He always called me “Tommy Gun”—a nickname I never quite lived up to. 😆

From fighting out of the back rooms of Mexican bars to sanctioned USA Boxing events at Shake ‘Em Up Show Club in Branson, those were some unforgettable days. My poor mom had to endure every minute of it, and I’m sure she questioned why I was doing it more than once.

But it meant something to me. It still does.

Those experiences gave me perspective, discipline, and a respect for anyone willing to step into a ring. I’ll be a fight fan until the day I die, and nobody can take those memories away from me.

A lot of people hate on fighting, but until you’ve gutted up and stepped into a ring with another person trying to take your head off, you’ll never fully understand the courage it takes.

That’s what gives me a unique perspective when I watch these fights today. 👊🥊
