Late last year, I reworked some pieces into submissions for Typism 10. They were all rejected. It stung and still stings, but it doesn’t mean these pieces have to gather digital dust.

This one is reworked from a project from 2021. If you recognize it, thanks for sticking around.

Lettering takes practice. When I’m feeling stuck, one of my favorite exercises is finding old horror stories in the public domain and using them as a point of inspiration.

“The Iron Coffin” is about a man abducted and held captive in a cell. Over the course of several days, he loses his grip on reality as he realizes his cell is slowly shrinking. Betraying his morals can bring freedom, but is the cost of his constitution worth it?

For the past year or so now, I’ve been honored enough to be a part of The Nascar Jones Show. I was originally brought on as a show format consultant and to design the logo, but that quickly changed. Now, I’m the on-screen ‘producer’ of the show, and part of the regular cast of ‘crew characters’.

This weird, improvised talk show is equal parts Muppet Show and The Eric Andre Show with a dash of Sunday ‘church service’ thrown in. The logo recalls the ‘golden era’ of daytime talk and game shows, and reflects Nascar Jones’ warm, happy-go-lucky demeanor.

Scroll to see some of the sketch/type explorations that helped get to the final result. I often sketch first to get the look and feel right, then see what resources can lend themselves to creating that result. Time was of the essence when creating this and I’ve got plans for a refreshed version for a future season.

One week left to use code ‘TRICKORTREAT’ over on MidnightType.co to get TWO free typefaces!

Farringdon is great for capturing that old west vibe, or reliving season 1 of ‘Tiger King’. 🐅👑 So grab it within the next week, before it goes up in price.

TRICKORTREAT expires in two weeks over at MidnightType.co 🎃🍬👻

Not one, but TWO free typefaces are still up for grabs because I love Halloween. After this month, they’ll be available for purchase at their regular price. So get them while you can.

Announcing Midnight Type!

It only took my 13 years, but you can now buy (some of) my typefaces. I finally found a home that feels good, works for me, and I can expand easily. In the end this felt effortless and I’m excited about putting all these ideas out into the world and seeing people create with them.

To celebrate, I’ve got two free typefaces available through October 31 that you can grab with the promo code ‘TRICKORTREAT’. It feels right given the season. Head over to MidnightType.co to get your goodies right now.

Sometimes when you’re figuring out how letters look, you end up drawing letters you never needed for the job. It’s like the look of an alphabet are all related or something, right?! 🙃

So in the process of exploring different looks for Pushing Dragons, I had three custom typefaces I worked with. Whether they got used or not, I thought I’d give them all a little showcase here.

The Pushing Dragons logo came from a funny place (no pun intended).

Back in 2017, a self-initiated project yielded a typeface named “Crozet”. The project sat dormant for 6 years until it found new life as a “What if it was thicker?” experiment.

I’d started drawing some other solutions for Pushing Dragons (scroll to see those) but nothing felt right. As a last ditch effort, I dig into my hard drive and pulled up this half-baked deco-nouveau bold, and the rest wrote itself.

Keep scrolling to see some of the hand-drawn sketches and even a redux of a Crozet specimen from 2017. ➡️

Over the past year, I’ve become acquainted with the world of Dungeons & Dragons from an unlikely place: The Push Comedy Theater. What started off as pandemic-coping fun, Pushing Dragons grew into a sellout show every month since it’s debut.

A show this big needed an identity as grand as it’s production. Something that fit within the DnD aesthetic, but as unique as the characters involved. But also gave the audience something respectful of the material that birthed it.

Referencing stonework and art deco/nouveau forms, these letters look at home alongside any Dungeon Master’s Guide. It even simplifies down to a crest-like “PD Sword” mark, keeping all its character and staying ready to fight.
