Why do Macs slow down over time?
One of the most common questions I get asked is why Macs slow down over time. The answer is actually quite simple: it's because of the way that macOS and other operating systems manage memory. When you first start using your Mac, everything is stored in what's called the "buffer cache."
This is a section of your computer's memory that's set aside for storing frequently accessed files and data. over time, however, the buffer cache can become full of junk data that's no longer needed. This junk data can cause your Mac to slow down because it takes up space in the cache that could be used for more useful data.
To make matters worse, macOS and other operating systems don't always do a good job of managing the buffer cache. They may keep too much data in the cache, or they may not clear it out often enough. As a result, the cache can become bogged down with junk data, and your Mac can start to slow down.
Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to speed up your Mac and get it running like new again. In the next section, I'll share some of my best tips for clearing out the cache and speeding up your Mac.
Simple tips and tricks to speed up your Mac
1. Keep Your Mac Updated
One of the simplest ways you can speed up your Mac is to keep it up-to-date with the latest software updates from Apple. Not only will this help ensure that your Mac has all the latest features and security patches, but it can also help improve performance.
2. Use Activity Monitor
Activity Monitor is a built-in utility on your Mac that can help you identify which apps or processes are using up the most resources. This can be helpful in pinpointing what might be causing your Mac to run slowly.
3. Clean Up Your Desktop
A cluttered desktop can slow down your Mac, so it’s important to keep it clean and organized. Try to store files in folders and only keep icons on your desktop that you need quick access to.
4. Empty Your Trash
You’d be surprised how much space you can free up by simply emptying your trash. To do this, just click on the trash can icon in your dock and then select “Empty Trash.”
5. Manage Your Startup Items
Startup items are apps or processes that automatically launch when you turn on your Mac. Having too many of these can slow down your Mac, so it’s important to only have the essentials.
To manage your startup items, open System Preferences and click on “Users & Groups.” Then, select your user account and click on the “Login Items” tab. From here, you can add or remove items from your startup list.
6. Disable Visual Effects
If you’re not concerned with how your Mac looks and just want it to run as fast as possible, you can disable some of the visual effects.
To do this, open System Preferences and click on “Accessibility.” Then, scroll down to the “Display” section and check the box next to “Reduce Motion.” This will disable some of the animations on your Mac, which can help improve performance.
7. Restart Your Mac Regularly
One of the best ways to speed up your Mac is to simply restart it on a regular basis. This will help clear out any junk that’s accumulated in your system memory and can help refresh your system. For best results, aim to restart your Mac at least once a week.
8. Use a Lightweight Browser
If you’re using a resource-heavy browser like Google Chrome, it can slow down your Mac. Consider switching to a more lightweight browser like Safari or Opera. These browsers are designed to be faster and use fewer resources, which can help improve your Mac’s performance.
9. Don’t Overload Your Mac
If you try to run too many apps at once or have too many tabs open in your browser, it can slow down your Mac. To avoid this, only have the apps and tabs open that you need and close anything that you’re not using.
How to keep your Mac running at its best?
These are a few key things you can do to keep your Mac running at its best:
1. Keep your Mac up-to-date with the latest software updates. This will help ensure that you have the latest security features and bug fixes.
