Another day in Unstoppable Week! Pick up a book and get the benefits of reading!!
Did you know there is now technology, a functional MRI, that allows doctors to see what happens in your brain when you read? In real-time, they see it improves brain connectivity and activates multiple centers. And it doesn't stop there. The research looking at the impact of reading is compelling and suggests it can lead to:
• Improved vocabulary and comprehension
• Greater ability to empathize with other people
• Reduces stress – some studies show it is as effective as yoga and exercise
• Lowers blood pressure and heart rate
• Reduces symptoms of depression
• Prevents cognitive decline as you age
• Is even shown to add years to your life
When you read to your children, it not only creates strong bonds between you and your child, reading becomes associated with warmth and love. If you haven’t been to the library, take your child and allow them to help select books to read together. Then, grab one for yourself. And, to make the most of it, read before bed as it is shown to aid in sleep readiness.
We encourage you to visit the Bloomington Public Library and Bloomington BOOKMOBILE, and Normal Public Library. They have special materials prepared and available on the Bookmobile and in the Children’s section at BPL, and on a display table on the first floor at NPL to help you and your child better understand and develop the Superpowers being promoted. And they have copies of an activity/coloring book, UNSTOPPABLE ME, in English and Spanish. And copies of our new book, My Name Is Stress, for all families to take home.
*Today, the Book Mobile will be at Wingover Apartments from 9:30-10:30 (near Avanti's on Rt 9), Eagle Ridge from 5:30-6:45 (near College and Airport), and Ballybunion from 7:30-8:30 (near Ireland Grove and Towanda Barnes).
