Where did our jobs go..? An alternative is to have our older products repaired. A repair might cost as much or even more than a cheaper replacement, but often the older units are built better - more ruggedly constructed and able to be serviced. The text itself was syndicated, so similar blurbs and photos ran in various science and DIY mechanics magazines (like *Science and Invention* or *Radio News*) across North America and beyond during the radio boom of 1922.

The man in the photo is identified as **F. E. Wilson** of Detroit, Michigan.

While history doesn't record a detailed biography for Mr. Wilson, he was part of the massive wave of early 1920s "tinkerers" and radio experimenters. When public radio broadcasting exploded in 1921–1922, commercial radio sets were expensive and bulky. As a result, thousands of hobbyists began building **crystal radio sets** out of whatever household items they had lying around—oatmeal boxes, pencil leads, matchboxes, and in Mr. Wilson's case, his favorite to***co pipe!

# # # How His Pipe Radio Worked

Despite looking like a prop from a silent comedy, Wilson's setup was actually a fully functioning **crystal radio receiver**:

* **The Tuning Coil:** He wrapped 100 turns of fine enameled copper wire (No. 26 gauge) around the outer bowl of his corn-cob pipe.
* **The Crystal Detector:** A small piece of **galena** (lead sulfide mineral) sat on the pipe stem. A thin, flexible wire called a **"catwhisker"** pivoted on the stem to touch a sensitive spot on the galena. This acted as a crude diode to extract the audio signal from the radio waves.
* **The Antenna (Aerial):** A diamond-shaped loop antenna was mounted right onto the headband of his 2,000-ohm headphones.
* **The "User Experience":** As the article dryly notes, Wilson could fill the pipe with to***co, light up at the end of the day, and listen to local stations broadcasting within a 10-mile radius while enjoying a smoke!
