Let’s talk about public infrastructure, usability, and what happens when bureaucratic mismanagement ruins a community investment.

​We strongly support modernizing our local infrastructure, which is why having an EV charging station at Nelson Park is a great step forward for Decatur. But anyone who drives an EV knows that when you plug in, you’re usually there for a bit. You should be able to enjoy the park, sit in the shade, or at the very least, use the restroom while you wait.

​Instead, the city has made the park practically unusable.

​If you visit the Nelson Park charger right now, you’ll find the public restrooms completely locked up, with repair requests ignored. Worse, the city has deployed what is known as "Hostile Architecture"—bolting heavy park benches together and dragging them out of the shade into the baking sun to deliberately make the space uncomfortable.

​In the business and tech world, we design systems to serve users. Here, the local bureaucracy is actively spending resources to deter people. Instead of addressing social issues or funding actual community programs, they’ve chosen the lazy route of making public amenities hostile for everyone. Families lose their shade, EV drivers lose basic facilities, and taxpayers lose the park they pay for.

​Modern infrastructure like EV charging networks only works when the surrounding environment supports the people using it.

The old way of charging comes with too much baggage. It’s time for a better carry-on. 🧳⚡

​I recently tried to pull up to a dealership just to plug in, pay, and get a charge. Instead, I got hit with locked gates, "internal only" restrictions, and a brick wall of hostility from a service department that wanted nothing to do with public charging infrastructure.

​It’s a pattern happening across the country: the big corporate PR promises a seamless, open EV future, but the actual boots-on-the-ground reality is a messy, siloed network where drivers are treated like an inconvenience.

​Franchise dealerships are struggling to carry the weight of public infrastructure they aren't equipped to manage. But we shouldn't have to pack an entire itinerary of backup plans just to travel a few hours down the road.
