Myth: If we close our account with a third-party software provider, our data and links are completely secure.
Reality: If you don't delete the DNS record pointing to that provider, you might have just handed a hacker an official company link.
It's a vulnerability called Subdomain Takeover, and it happens because of a breakdown between marketing, operations, and IT offboarding.
When you abandon a custom link (like event.yourcompany) but leave the connection active in your website settings, it becomes a "dangling" record. Attackers actively scan for these. Once found, they claim the empty slot on the hosting platform side and instantly take control of your sub-domain.
They don't need to hack your main site. They just use your abandoned real estate to host scams or send phishing emails that look 100% authentic to your clients.
If a service is no longer in use, that record shouldn't just be inactive—it must be deleted.
