I have enjoyed 13 years working in the labeling industry. During this time, I have encountered several moments where customers and prospective customers have experienced production delays for the sake of a missing label. How could something so small be so important to prevent companies from selling their product?

The answer is simple: labels are not an afterthought—they are a critical component of the production process. When labeling is overlooked or treated as a last-minute task, even the most well-run operations can come to a halt.

The Hidden Power of a Label
Labels serve many purposes beyond aesthetics. They communicate regulatory compliance, branding, traceability, safety information, and product identity. Without the proper label in place, finished goods often cannot ship, warehouses cannot release inventory, and retailers cannot accept product. In regulated industries a missing or incorrect label can mean legal exposure in addition to lost revenue.

Common Causes of Label-Related Delays
Across the industry, production delays related to labeling typically stem from a few recurring issues:

Late engagement with label suppliers Label companies are brought in after artwork is finalized, compliance is assumed, and timelines are compressed.
Underestimating lead times Specialty materials, custom adhesives, finishes, or regulatory approvals often require longer production windows than expected.
Last-minute design or regulatory changes A small text change, barcode adjustment, or compliance update can trigger reprints or approval delays.
Supply chain disruptions Raw material shortages, freight delays, or unexpected demand spikes can affect label availability just like any other component.

These challenges highlight why choosing the right label partner—and engaging them early—can make a significant difference.

Evaluating Label Companies: What to Look For
Not all label companies operate the same way. While price and quality are important, long-term success often depends on partnership, communication, and planning support.

1. Consultative Label Providers The strongest label companies act as advisors, not just printers. They ask questions about application methods, environments, compliance requirements, and production schedules before recommending materials or formats.

2. Regulatory and Compliance Expertise Experienced label companies stay up to date on FDA, GHS, UL, and other regulatory standards. Their guidance can prevent costly redesigns and rejected shipments.

3. Scalable Production Capabilities Whether you need short runs for a launch or high volumes for national distribution, a capable label partner should scale with your business and anticipate growth.

4. Inventory and Forecasting Support Some label companies offer inventory management programs, stocking agreements, or blanket orders that ensure labels are available when production ramps up.

5. Clear Communication and Reliability Consistent lead times, proactive updates, and transparency during disruptions help manufacturers plan confidently and avoid surprises.

The Value of Early Label Planning
Engaging a label company early in the product development cycle allows teams to:

Validate material selection before production
Identify potential application or durability issues
Align label production with manufacturing schedules
Build buffer inventory for critical SKUs
Reduce the risk of last-minute delays
