Please BEWARE of Email & Website SCAMS!!!!
We hope everyone is staying safe and enjoying some Spring-like weather finally. As if there wasn’t enough to be cautious about these days, there is a new wave of Ransomware cyber-attacks taking place right now online. This new strain called Clearlock has taken the shape of both an infected video link on a website, and an email from what looks like a person you know and trust, but it is not!! It is a scammer posing like someone you know, using their name, because that person’s email (or yours) may have been hacked. The email contains a LINK, and if clicked, the virus begins to run its course where in the end, wants to charge you money to get your data back. Please follow these helpful tips:
1. Never click a link in your email, unless you call the sender to verify it is legitimate. Remember, no matter how much money you spend on software antivirus, malware protection, firewall appliances and licenses, VPNs, etc., if you click on a seemingly harmless link you are essentially trusting the sender, then you are tricked into providing vital information and next thing you know all your data: photos, videos, music, and email, can be held for Ransom and these criminals charge you money to get it back. This is terrible for an individual but can be catastrophic to a business.
2. Don’t open emails from people you don’t know.
3. Don’t believe anyone who calls, texts, or emails you and says they are with Microsoft or Quickbooks, Netflix, or Spotify etc. and state that “you have a virus” or “your system indicated to us that there is a problem and we can get on your computer to help” or “we need to update your payment information”, and the list goes on.. classic SCAMS! Hang up, DELETE, Do not click anything! Contact the company directly who allegedly sent the notification, or login to your accounts to verify that it is OK.
4. Your best defense is knowledge – always stay cautious and even suspicious online.
5. Be careful when clicking video links in a browser on your computer or device.
If you feel you have been compromised in any way, disconnect yourself from the internet immediately, unplug network wire, or shut off your WiFi. Shut the system down by pressing the power button for 10 seconds. Wait a minute and power back on and go through your system checking that it seems normal. If not contact M-TEK to schedule a drop-off or onsite appointment to resolve. FTC gives the following info to REPORT your scam:
