The thing you want is right on the other side of fear- and like I tell my son: “Bravery is being afraid and doing the thing anyway”. Creating the life you want is not without risk, but it’s so worth it. 🤙

I’ve been working behind the scenes on Kindred’s brand.

“What do you mean you build brands? Don’t you already have one?”

Yes, I do! But honestly, overthinking it had me veering off course. And if you work in brand development you know that sometimes the hardest brand to work on and see clearly is your own.

I was trying so hard to fit into the “agency mold.” I looked at what others were doing and wondered why certain things didn’t come naturally to me. I was viewing Kindred as separate from myself, and that’s where things got muddled.

Kindred is me. The only way I can show up authentically is by being myself-writing posts in my own voice, just like I would if we were talking in person. Because when you work with Kindred, you’re working with me. I’m the one you message, email, or collaborate with on a brand or photo shoot. So why was I trying to sound like something else?

I also did what many people encourage: hyper-niching. I thought it was the key to attracting the types of businesses and brands I wanted to work with. But after a couple of years of reflection, I realized that the brands I truly want to partner with are the ones I personally connect with. Sometimes they fit a specific niche or industry, and sometimes they don’t- and that’s totally okay. If we vibe together, understand each other, and get excited when we talk, then I’m in the right place. You’re a kindred spirit, and I’ve found you!

So, I’m aiming to show up more authentically here. Less polished. More stream of consciousness. I’m done overthinking how strategic my copy sounds. It’s just too hard. When I finally decided to start posting and saying what I genuinely wanted to, it started to feel effortless.

With this mindset shift, I’m working to align the visual elements of Kindred’s brand with what feels like working with me: fun, real, imperfect, interesting, exciting…

I’ll be sharing it all pretty soon, starting with a brand new website. But for now, enjoy this adorable illustration sneak peek, thanks to my super talented friend

I have a kind of unhinged note in my phone titled “Hills I’ll Die On”. They’re not brand related, but it did inspire me to make one related to creative work!

If you want sneak of my personal list: 2. Mangoes don’t taste right. They’re supposed to taste more citrusy. It’s all wrong.

I have a little confession. 🤫

Sometimes I feel like working in marketing is… icky.

I mean, I’m pretty anti-capitalism, in favor of protecting our environment, in absolute awe of the beauty of this earth we’ve been gifted, and at odds with the way my skill set and career don’t always feel aligned.

This business is the best way I’ve discovered to build a life that I want; with balance, freedom, adventure, discovery, and a calm nervous system. But at the end of the day, I still work in marketing with the end goal: to get people to make purchases.

I have been trying to figure out how to do this in a way that feels authentic to me and aligned with my beliefs. Although that can be hard in the system we’ve inherited, it also continuously reminds me to ask myself certain questions:

* Am I working with clients who feel tied to a larger purpose? Community, connection, art, relationships, experiences… My kindred spirits?

* Does my current workload support all the things I want to do in my life? Do I have the time and freedom to do them? Do I have full control over my own schedule? Are we going to have time this year to go on seven long camping trips?

These questions have actually been the difference maker in a lot of different opportunities that have come across my desk in this last year. Opportunities that, on paper, I *really* want to take on. But would I be building the authentic business and brand that is truly me?

I don’t believe in 100% balance. Not that it’s not possible, but that it’s not sustainable. So I check in with myself every so often and try to redirect. I started Kindred to ensure I could confidently answer “yes” to those questions and so that the work I find myself doing every day fills my cup (and others’) and supports business owners who are passionate about the things that I also value, without tying me down to the rat race. That’s all we can do, friends!

Go touch grass and ask yourself the same. ✌️

I have always loved photographing spaces. I shot my first short-term rental back in 2015- when they weren’t quite as common as they are now.

I had no experience shooting spaces, and to be honest, I think that was an advantage. I didn’t go into the project with any preconceived ideas or “shoulds”. I just went in with my camera and let my creativity take over- framing, composition, and capturing light.

Since 2015, I have worked with countless short-term rental owners, property managers, and even boutique hotels. I am a firm believer that if you want your space to stand out, especially if you are a high-end or luxury stay, your photography needs to be TOP TIER. Your photos are what sell your space immediately, so make sure they’re great.

It’s not just picking your favorite colors 🫶Choosing the right color palette can be a nuanced process, and there are a few different approaches we take:

Sometimes, clients come to me with a general idea of the colors they want. From there, we refine those choices by honing in on specific shades and testing combinations to achieve visual balance and accessible legibility. This is crucial. Many overlook whether their color choices will actually work in practice.

Other times, clients have an overall vibe or mood in mind. We might draw inspiration from visual references they provide. However, our conversation always centers around how these colors will function IRL.

They might look stunning in a graphic or logo, but will they translate effectively to an in-person retail space? How will they hold up for signage or other applications?

Ultimately, our goal is to ensure that the chosen color palette not only looks great but also serves its purpose effectively in various contexts.
