Good Design should be understood by everyone. I watched this so you don't have to. It is pretty short, though, so just go and watch it. The first phonetic alphabet, one that relied on how words sounded, was created by regular people, trying to communicate. It was simpler than hieroglyphics. You did not need to know what each symbol meant. You did not need to be one of the ruling elite. You just could sound out the pictures. It's democratic and very cool.
It became the basis for most written languages, beginning 4,000 years ago in the Sinai desert.
