Your IT budget should cover more than replacing old computers.

When was the last time you reviewed what your business actually spends on technology?

We're not just talking about new laptops or software subscriptions.

What about:

Keeping your systems updated and secure?
Protecting your business email accounts?
Backing up important files AND testing those backups?
Monitoring for suspicious activity?
Training employees to recognize cybersecurity threats?
Having someone to call when something goes wrong?

You don't necessarily need a full-time IT department to handle these things.

You do need a plan and someone responsible for making sure they're getting
done.

Because having technology and having someone responsible for that technology are two very different things.

A cyberattack is a terrible time to start asking:
Who do we call?
What do we shut down?
Do we contact our cyber insurance company?
What are we required to document?
Who tells our customers?

Those decisions should be made before something happens.

An Incident Response Plan gives your team a roadmap so everyone knows what to do when every minute counts.

Don't have one?

That's something your IT and cybersecurity provider should be helping you build.

You budget for payroll.
You budget for phones.
You budget for internet.
You budget for insurance.
You budget for equipment.
You budget for marketing.

So why aren't more businesses budgeting for the technology that keeps all of it moving?

Think about how much of your business stops when technology stops.
Employees can't work.
Customers can't reach you.
Payments can’t be processed.
Files can't be accessed.
Orders can't be completed.

Yet IT is often treated like an expense that only comes up when something breaks.
Technology isn't an emergency expense. It's a business expense.

Your IT budget should account for maintaining what you have today, protecting it, replacing aging equipment, and planning for what your business will need tomorrow.

Because “we’ll deal with it when it breaks” can get really expensive.

Not everything that creates a cybersecurity risk looks suspicious.

Sometimes it's a free VPN.
Sometimes it's a browser extension.
Sometimes it's an AI tool someone found online.
And sometimes the employee installing it genuinely believes they're making their job easier or their device safer.

The question isn't whether your employees have good intentions.

It's whether your business has clear guidelines about what software is approved, who reviews it, and what happens when something creates a security concern.

Your employees shouldn't have to be cybersecurity experts. But they should know who to ask.

Does your business have a policy for downloading and installing software?

We don't want you calling us.

Wait… hear us out. 😂

If you're calling because:
Your server is down.
Your internet stopped working.
Nobody can log in.
Something got hacked.
Your entire office has come to a screeching halt…

We'd much rather catch the problem before you ever knew it existed.

That's why good IT isn't just about fixing things when they break.

It's monitoring, maintaining, updating and watching what's happening behind the scenes so your team can just… work.

But if you do need us?

We know. We KNOW. 😂

You call IT with a problem and one of the first questions is:
“Have you restarted your computer?”

And somewhere, an employee rolls his eyes.

But here's the annoying part…
It works. A lot.

Restarting clears temporary processes, finishes updates and can resolve all kinds of weird little issues.

So yes, we're going to ask.

And yes, we're probably going to know if you lied. 😂

Quick cybersecurity question:
Do you know exactly who has administrative access to your systems right now?

Not who should have access.

Who actually does.

Former employees, old vendors, unused accounts and excessive permissions can quietly stick around long after someone needed them.

Make reviewing user accounts and administrative privileges part of your regular cybersecurity housekeeping.

If you haven't looked lately, October is a pretty good time to start.

Four words we recently heard from an Oklahoma business dealing with serious cybersecurity concerns.

And we get it. Running a business isn't cheap.

But here's something worth considering.

In May, an Oklahoma county had $212,000 redirected to criminals through cyber-enabled fraud.

Fortunately, they had financial resources to help keep things moving.

But how many small businesses have $212,000 sitting in reserve?
You budget for payroll, insurance, equipment and rent.
Why isn't protecting the technology that keeps your business running part of that conversation?

Our final Cybersecurity Awareness Month blog asks a question every business owner should consider:

Can you really afford NOT to have IT?

Your business probably has a plan for:

Growth.
Hiring.
Sales.
Marketing.
Equipment.
Insurance.

But what's the plan for your technology?

Not just when something breaks.

What needs to be replaced next year?
Are your systems keeping up with your growth?
Are you paying for things you don't need?
What technology could make your employees more productive?

Good IT shouldn't just fix today's problems.

It should help you plan for what's next
That's the difference between having someone who fixes computers and having an IT partner.
