Our Virtual Farm Tours continue with a look at Double Eagle Dairy in Middleton, Michigan!

Owned by John and Karen Weller, Double Eagle Dairy is a multi-generational family farm working toward bringing in its fourth generation. What began with just five cows after World War II has grown into a 3,500-cow dairy and one of Michigan’s leading milk producers. Today, the farm raises nearly all of its feed on 6,000 acres of corn, alfalfa and wheat while keeping all of its cattle within the state.

Innovation has played an important role in the farm’s growth, from installing one of Michigan’s first rotary parlors in 2006 to recently adopting Afimilk rumination collars and advanced parlor technology. The farm also continues to invest in animal care and efficiency through improvements to cattle handling, sand bedding and sand separation.

Double Eagle Dairy balances its breeding program between herd replacements and a growing beef-on-dairy program, while also focusing on soil health, nutrient management and responsible manure utilization.

Come learn more about Double Eagle Dairy and the people, practices and technology that have helped shape four generations of this Michigan dairy during World Dairy Expo!

🌟 Employee of the Month 🌟

This month we’re recognizing Emily, our Office & Warehouse Associate, who has been with MDT for almost a year!

Emily chose to join MDT for the opportunity to learn new skills, take on new challenges, and be part of a growing team. She especially enjoys being involved in the day-to-day flow of the business, from inventory to billing, and appreciates having a consistent schedule with weekends off.

Outside of work, Emily is a big outdoor and animal lover. Her favorite hobby, though, is traveling to see live music and attending as many concerts as she can! 🐈🍂🎶

We’re glad to have you on the team, Emily! 🤍

Dairy History: 1890 🐄📜

In the late 1800s, milk was commonly sold by weight, not by its butterfat content. Without a standardized way to measure butterfat, farmers could add water to increase the weight or remove cream before selling. This made it difficult to know the true quality and value of the milk.

In 1890, University of Wisconsin Professor Stephen M. Babcock introduced a simple solution: the Babcock Test. Using sulfuric acid and a centrifuge, the test separated butterfat from milk so it could be accurately measured.

The test helped create a more consistent way to determine the value of milk—and Babcock made his invention available to everyone. He refused to patent it, allowing farmers, dairies, and others to freely use and improve the test.

While the original Babcock Test is no longer the standard method, its impact continues today. Modern milk-testing equipment can quickly measure butterfat, protein, lactose, and other components, helping ensure farmers are fairly compensated for the milk they produce!🥛⚖️

Install of the Week 🛠️

This week we completed a major network and connectivity upgrade across multiple areas of this dairy operation to keep everything connected and running efficiently! 🐄

The project included:
🛜 Installing an exterior WiFi access point next to the bridge to provide coverage from the outdoor area all the way to the parlor
💻 Installing a new 16-port network switch and computer in the vet room
🖨️ Replacing the computer and installing a new monitor, peripherals, 16-port network switch, and WiFi access point at the new parlor
🌐 Upgrading the networking in the old office with a new 16-port switch and WiFi access point
