“Words make money.”

That’s the tagline of Wes Gay—one of the top StoryBrand guides in the world. Wes is a copywriter for founders who’d rather not sound like everyone else.

Wes went pretty far without much of a logo or visual identity to speak of, but when he wanted to take things to the next level he called Fruitful.

During his design discovery, one of the things I realized right away is that Wes is a man of taste. He admires vintage watches and cars. He enjoys classic fountain pens. He’s a southern men’s fashion aficionado. I began to draw inspiration from some of these sources – exploring classic monograms, etchings, and vintage color schemes.

Three special visuals that emerged from the logo sketches:

🖋️ A fountain pen nib
🐊 A Florida alligator
🔤 A Classic hand-lettered name & monogram

As a lover of fine writing instruments and a professional writer, the classic shape of a pen nib (with a hidden letter “W” for “Wes) became an instant hit for the main logo mark. The hand-drawn alligator illustration emerged as a supporting brand element—a nod to his Florida upbringing, and his southern gentleman charm. Many classic and luxury brands incorporate animal “mascot” motifs for brand recognition and this seemed to fit Wes’ vibe pretty well.

In the end, Wes received a full brand book with fonts, colors, a hand drawn logo mark (in many versions) and a supporting brand “mascot” alligator.

It’s fun to see Wes using this brand on his new website, and in all of his LinkedIn videos. Make sure you follow him and check out his awesome content. I was deeply honored to play an important role in Wes Gay’s visual brand identity!

"Process is how we differentiate ourselves from AI."

That’s how I began my recent breakout session at the 2026 OnBrand conference, entitled “The Collaborative Design Process.”

There’s no doubt that Artificial Intelligence is here to stay—and it’s great for certain tasks. But, the truth is, not all work is created equal.

In my talk, I encouraged designers to do “foundational work”—the kind of work that is good for us to experience wi humans as it’s so closely linked to our identity and reputation.

I showed how books are foundational artifacts as they are so personal and so linked to the author's identity. The right clients will never feel good about simply outsourcing something so important to a machine. They want to go through the experience of designing the cover with an actual person. (I talked about some of my recent book clients, including Chris Beaty, Josh Dotzler and Dave Miller.)

I then encouraged my audience to create human, collaborative experiences for creating that foundational work. I walked through my own design process in detail—highlighting the messy, handcrafted, human aspects that make it so special to experience.

No matter how insecure or awkward you might think you are—you will always be better than AI at human connection.

I’ve been a big fan of The Wednesday Conversation podcast since Coram Deo Church launched it over ten years ago. Fruitful designed the original podcast artwork for the show—so, when I heard that they were going to be changing up the name and format,I was hopeful for the opportunity to rebrand it.

Podcast host Bob Thune wanted a graphic that evoked the optimism and promise of the new heavens and the new earth—yet it needed to be grounded in place. In my creative process I explored many concepts but we ultimately arrived on a handcrafted, painterly approach that captures the agricultural beauty of a midwestern sunrise over a corn field.

I just rebranded a logo that I originally designed!

13 years ago, I created the logo and brand guidelines for 402 Arts Collective—an Omaha-based non-profit organization committed to high-quality music and art education. At the time, Fruitful was just starting out, and moved into The 402 building in downtown Benson, NE. (In fact, I even taught piano lessons via 402 Arts Collective as I got my business off the ground!) Over the years, the logo served the organization well and was implemented across many mediums and locations.

However, earlier this year, Ben Shafer approached me to revamp the logo to be more "responsive": more readable and recognizable at smaller sizes. Even though I was still proud of the logo I made 13 years before, I had to agree that the mark could revisited to be more versatile and legible.

So, here's what I did:

1. Redrew the “402” numbers to have less detail/sharp points—and to be more horizontal/grounded. This helped eliminate a lot of negative space/awkward alignment issues.

2. Removed the word “The” from the logo – as the official name is really “402 Arts Collective”—and “The” added unnecessary confusion and complexity.

3. Made “Arts Collective” more bold and readable in all lockups—eliminating unnecessary negative space across the board.
Introduced refreshed colors and fonts to the brand.

In the end—I’m very proud of how this new logo turned out. I feel like it is still faithful to the feel of the original mark but with a minimal, modern flair.

I sat down with Bob Thune and Bethany Gilbert for a “Faith & Work” segment of the All Things New podcast. (I’d recommend checking out the YouTube video version as Bob shows a few visual design samples!) Together we unpack how and why I became a graphic designer, some of the work I’ve done for Coram Deo Church Community over the years, and explore some of the spiritual aspects of the work that I do.

Really honored to be asked, and really enjoyed this conversation with Bob & Bethany! Follow All Things New on YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts!

This summer, I was deeply honored to share my design process and philosophy at the 2026 OnBrand conference.

My breakout session was entitled “The Collaborative Design Process”—making the case for creatives to get even more handcrafted, human, and experiential with their processes to differentiate from this AI slop world we're living in. (I’ll share some of my slides soon!) The talk was well attended with lots of great questions and conversations with fellow creatives afterwards.

Great to see Raj Lulla giving the opening keynote (featuring Fruitful’s longtime client Kristin Lowrey of Access Period). I also ran into my old boss/design mentor Donovan Beery and cartoonist/radio host, Jeff Koterba.

Not pictured here are some awesome folks like Nathan Richardson of Relentless Merch, Teruko Tsubaki, Jordan the Ninja – and many others!

Looking forward to OnBrand 2027!

Fruitful is proud to introduce Lulla Consulting.🐘

After nine years as my business partner and principal brand strategist here at Fruitful, Raj Lulla is stepping away to launch something new: Lulla Consulting.

It has been a joy to work alongside Raj since 2013 helping to solve our clients problems with our complementary design and strategy skills, and I’m happy to report that we have concluded our business partnership on the best of terms. We are still collaborating with each other on projects and clients, but now as contractors of our own separate companies: Fruitful Design and Lulla Consulting. This distinction gives each of us the opportunity to specialize and niche down as the world around us changes.

As you might expect, I had the honor of helping create the visual branding and website for Raj’s new endeavor. You can check it all out at:

www.lullaconsulting.com

Here’s a little about Lulla Consulting, from Raj:

“Lulla Consulting is specifically focused on helping leaders communicate strategically. AI can write anything, but it can’t tell you if it’s the right thing to say at the right time. Whether it’s creating a magazine for pediatric healthcare workers, figuring out how to talk about putting cattle on a blockchain, or anything else you need help communicating, I’m here to help.”

You can learn more about what led to this business decision on Raj’s LinkedIn post. Go connect with him if you haven’t already.

Raj, I’m rooting for you and excited for this next chapter in both of our businesses!

Sincerely,

Ben Lueders
