At Ken's PC Repair, our bench computers are an important part of diagnosing and testing gaming rigs. We have one for each of the currently supported consumer CPU sockets.

🔧 When a blown fuse isn’t a simple fuse replacement…

Most people think replacing a fuse is as easy as pulling the old one out and plugging in a new one. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case!

On this automotive fuse panel, the fuses are actually soldered directly to the circuit board. That means when one fails, you can’t simply pull it out. The module has to be disassembled and the fuse carefully desoldered from the board and replaced without damaging the PCB.

Manufacturers are packing more electronics into modules like these, which can make what sounds like a simple repair considerably more complicated.

Fortunately, board-level soldering is something we do right here in our shop. 🔬🛠️

Sometimes the difference between replacing an expensive module and repairing it comes down to being able to work at the component level.

Xbox Series S with a badly broken HDMI port. Broken so badly it ripped 13 of the 19 traces from the PCB. After repairing them all with tiny, hair sized jumper wires it's ready to game again!

💧 Nintendo Switch Water Damage Repair! 🎮🔧

This Nintendo Switch came in with water damage and corrosion on the motherboard. As you can see in the photo, moisture had made its way onto some of the tiny components and started causing problems.

After carefully cleaning the affected area, diagnosing the damage, and repairing the board by replacing that larger chip, we were able to bring this Switch back to life! 🙌

Water and electronics definitely don't mix—but water damage doesn't always mean your console is done for.

⚠️ If your Switch gets wet:
• Turn it off immediately
• Don't plug it in or try to charge it
• Don't keep trying to power it on
• Bring it in as soon as possible—the longer corrosion sits, the more damage it can cause

🔥 Your PS5 Needs to Breathe! 🎮

Check out this before & after from a PlayStation 5 cleaning we recently did.

That thick layer of dust and debris isn’t just ugly—it can seriously restrict airflow through the PS5’s heatsink. The PS5 already produces a significant amount of heat while gaming, and when airflow gets blocked, temperatures can climb quickly.

Over time, excessive dust buildup can contribute to:

🔥 Overheating and shutdowns
🌡️ Higher operating temperatures
💨 Fans running harder and louder
🎮 Performance problems while gaming
⚠️ Extra stress on internal components

In the past, this shelf has been stocked with over 350 laptops to give out to youth from low-income families. Today, there are five, and all five are already spoken for.

This is the very real problem that we're up against right now. You might not know this, but for the past several years, Made New has been the laptop provider for Omaha's NDHHS office, CASA, and several other foster care agencies and nonprofits. The truth is, if a government office or nonprofit program in the metro was giving out free refurbished laptops, in nearly every case we were their source.

And now, with schools starting this week and the need greater than ever, we have no working laptops to give out.

To be fair, a few more are on the way. We brought several boxes of broken laptops to Ken's PC Repair Omaha last week, and Ken and his team are working on bringing as many of those back to life as they can. Since our first request for help earlier this month, we are so incredibly thankful to have received a few more laptops which have been donated and are waiting to be refurbished.

Still, this is the tip of the iceberg compared to the need in Omaha. Just today I've had to tell another family that we're going to need to put them onto a waiting list.

If you have a laptop computer that's capable of running Windows 11, or a Mac that was made in the last 10 years or so, and you're not putting it to use, we can get it into the hands of a young person from a low-income family. And if you oversee the IT department of a company that purchases Laptops and recycle them at the end of their life cycle, we really want to talk to you. Your laptop could mean success for a struggling young person.
