Cyber waste is a real problem...

The more complicated our networks get the more we become susceptible to cyber waste, and it can strike in multiple ways. When you are reviewing your technology budget trying to find some wiggle-room here are a few of the things to look out for…

➡A well-articulated Cyber program may enjoy better cyber insurance premiums. If you believe your cyber insurance provider has not properly represented your cyber controls, you may be able to negotiate a lower premium by demonstrating your full capabilities. BONUS: Well-articulated cyber programs also take less time to audit.

➡Vendors are moving towards a strategy of “Convergence” this means that they are packing in as many capabilities as they can into their products to try and build as much reliance on them as possible. This means that some of your cybersecurity products may be doing the same thing. Review your technology at the capability level to see if you have any overlap, those may be opportunities to recover some of your budget.

➡ We often buy products for a direct need, but sometimes those products have additional capabilities that go underutilized. Those products are paid for! Use them to reduce risk and build up capabilities without spending any more money.

TALAS Security was recently invited by the Sullivan County BOCES Data Protection Officer (DPO) for an interactive presentation on how the TALAS methodology is built to Simplify, Organize, and Strengthen Cybersecurity programs for K-12 districts. We had a great time meeting all the regional K-12 technology leaders within Sullivan County.

We want to give a big shout out and thank you Zieres for the platform and opportunity to present. Along with a major thank you to all the technologist that participated across the various districts.

I don’t need a Cybersecurity program…

Organizing a cybersecurity program seems daunting - especially when we talk to our SMB partners who are resource constrained, exhausted by threats, and simply don’t know where to start. Situations like this create an environment that encourages reactions like panic-buying cybersecurity products, but buying tools without a program is like building a house without a plan. Here are some of the reasons organizations of all sizes should focus on building and formalizing their cybersecurity program first.

Maximize your existing investments. We have found that most organizations already have core cybersecurity capabilities, they just have to be organized in a way that aligns them for defense. You have already invested in your cyber protections; a cyber program will help you focus those investments to maximize return.

Know where to focus limited resources. Cybersecurity is not actually about covering everything. The speed at which threats evolve makes that impossible. The goal is to focus on your largest risks. All organizations have limited resources - people, time, money. A cyber program helps you know where to focus those resources to reduce the most risk possible.

Organize for compliance. Most industries have some form of Cybersecurity regulation, and if you are a part of one that does not – it’s coming. A cyber program allows you to align the various elements of cybersecurity control with those regulations to demonstrate compliance, not only to your regulators, but also to your customers.

To some, building and formalizing a cyber program feels like overhead, but a strong cyber program is what helps you make sense of highly complex problems and enables you to safely and efficiently do business in today’s digitally connected world.

When we see articles like this one it just reinforces that the key here is getting organized. Cybersecurity tends to be thought of in terms of products & solutions, but that is just one aspect of cyber control. no matter what your business, focus on your program first. Get organized, use the tools you already have and be ready to act. We really appreciate Dark Reading for their perspective here.

The challenges are steep, but school districts can fight back with planning.
