I have had a lot of people happily cleaning out their closets of their old laptops and desktops, bringing them to me to recycle. I took a load just weeks ago and it looks like I'll need to go again soon. So if you have old electronics you don't want to toss in the trash and want to see them recycled, bring them in. If they're a laptop, the batteries are removed and taken to Interstate Battery to recycle. I also removed all the hard drives from desktops and laptops and secure wipe them so no data is recoverable. Then it is all taken to Estroyed in Grand Island for recycling.

Recently some customers from a Burwell medical practice received an email that the practice did not send out, but it had malware attached to it that installs a remote software allowing hackers into your system. They then target your banks and have been moving some money - and eventually taking that money. I think the intent with moving it around first is to test the bank security before taking any. If you received this email and do online banking and your system has the password for that banking stored, please make sure you have a technician look over your machine and remove the screenconnect software that is loading in the background and allowing them access, and check in with your banks so that they are keeping an eye on your accounts. If you know of anyone using medical practices in Burwell that uses email, you might check in with them as well and make sure they know as well.

I am taking in a load of computers and laptop batteries to GI on Monday for recycling. If anyone has any old systems or laptop batteries they want disposed of, bring them by Friday and I will get the hard drive secure wiped and add it all to my collection to take in!

Taking a load of retired computers, laptops, and other electronics and cords to be recycled today! Batteries go to interstate battery and the rest goes to E-stroyed who then parts and recycles them. The harddrives I secure wipe before donating. Keep it in mind when you’re spring cleaning!

Email scams are amping up again. Be aware and never contact them! If you don’t think you ordered it, you didn’t. And if you’re still concerned check directly with your banks or credit cards, or go to the site directly. Mcaffee.com or Nortons.com or Amazon or PayPal or whoever they’re claiming to be. If you follow the link or call the number they have you.

Make sure when ordering systems online that you get what you ordered. This happened a LOT to me this winter, and just happened again today. I ordered a system with 16gb of memory and a 512gb harddrive and got one with a 256gb harddrive. It happened atleast 8 times from Thanksgiving to Christmas also. Sometimes with incorrect memory, sometimes with incorrect storage. I doubt very much it’s accidental most of the time.

Finally have a resource for recycling old laptop batteries, motherboards, memory and harddrives! No need to toss them in the trash when there's somewhere that can recycle them. Interstate Batteries in Grand Island will take old batteries and E-stroyed in Grand Island takes old electronics, including cell phones and computers.

Speaking of passwords...when Microsoft has you set up a pin code to make logging in to windows easier, it does not remove your password, it attaches the code to that password. When I try to do repairs to Windows, I need the password - the shortcut code will not work. So PLEASE - if you set up a pin code, make sure you still have your password stored somewhere as well.

If you're going to have social media you need to make sure:

1) You have the password. Tech support can't help you remember what you set up when you set it up. And if someone else helped you, it's their responsibility to make sure they give you that information and yours to keep track of it.

2) Keep the connecting email address/phone number that you set the account up with current. If you change email addresses and then need to get back into the account later it won't be possible if the account information isn't current.

3) Social media sites have protective measures to help make sure someone can't take over your account without your knowledge. If the email address is changed, you will be notified. DO NOT IGNORE THIS If the phone number associated with your account changes, they will notify you. You need to respond if someone is attemping to hack into your account. Changing your account password doesn't necessarily help if the hacker has already entered in their email and you don't change it back.

4) Enable all protective measure like having a secondary email address in case your first one becomes compromised, having your cell phone connected so that codes can be texted to you in case you need to recover an account, and again - making sure your information is current and NOT IGNORNING WARNINGS.

5) Finally - there is a big difference between having your account cloned or copied and being hacked. When your account is copied they literally just copy photos and attempt to contact friends on your list. This usually happens because you've friended someone you don't know and given them access to your information, or someone you DO know has been hacked and now they have access to their friends. I usually remove people who are continually hacked since they clearly have unsafe social media practices and are opening me up to the possibility of being hacked. When you are actually being hacked they will change information slowly so that it becomes impossible for you to regain access to your account. If that happens PLEASE do not just open a new account. All the friends on your friends list on the hacked account are now open to being hacked. They need to UNFRIEND the hacked account, report it, and add your new account.

It is not simple to get back an account that has been hacked if you ignore the warnings or don't have your account properly locked down. Please be responsible.
