A critical vulnerability has been found in a popular WordPress plugin called Advanced Custom Fields: Extended, putting around 50,000 websites at risk of full takeover.

Here’s why that’s serious.

Under the right conditions, someone who isn’t logged in at all could create a new administrator account on an affected site. And on WordPress, administrator access means everything. Content, users, plugins, themes. Full control. ⚠️

There is a caveat. The vulnerability only applies to sites using specific user creation forms with role mapping enabled. That limits the exposure somewhat.

** severity rating still 9.8 out of 10. A fix is available and more than half of affected sites have already updated.

One outdated plugin can undo a lot of good work elsewhere.
