Had some friends ask "Just what is this metaverse?? I'll try to answer but, remember, the metaverse is just getting started in its present configuration, so anything I say today will be outdated tomorrow.
Start thinking about the Metaverse as the next major change in the internet.
So - for history buffs - the very first effort was a military effort that was officially begun in 1966 called the Arpanet. The first computers were connected in 1969.
The contemporary internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that uses the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to communicate between networks and devices. It is a network of networks that consists of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents and applications of the World Wide Web (WWW), electronic mail, telephony, and file sharing. (Wikipedia).
Now our use of the internet is evolving into something much greater. Spearheaded by gaming people and businesses around the world we are developing (metaverse) worlds in which people in distant locations are able to meet together, interact socially, and do business.
An avatar is the representation of yourself that you develop. It is how you look when you are in the metaverse. Using these personal representations, individuals are now working and being paid in the metaverse. They are also playing and touring and relaxing.
To access it, the current preferred method is the use of a special headset. But, some have invested in full body suits that monitor whether you are standing or sitting and what your arms do as you talk and also provide temperature and haptic feedback. These body suits then cause your avatar to behave similarly.
Other really attractive aspects have to do with touring. Today, you can tour parts of world without leaving your home. You contact a guide (let’s say) in Venice. You and she agree on a price, cc transaction, don your VR (virtual reality) headset, and enjoy a 1:1 live walking tour of Venice complete with the ability for a 2-way verbal exchange with your guide. You will also “see” your guide as you experience the tour.
If you decide to try it out, the most commonly recommended headset is the Oculus 2 by Facebook. It costs around $300.
That’s it for now. Keep the questions coming.

Tracking the Metaverse...this morning I see that businesses have already begun orienting their operations to accommodate the
Metaverse. For instance, businesses are seeing themselves on the front line...formulating the way they interface with their customers...and...as we continue to spend on VR tech. we'll more and more be meeting each other in the Metaverse.

And, you do realize that "where we spend our time" is where we spend our money". One report projects that spending in the Metaverse will increase from approximately $180 billion in 2020 to about $400 billion in 2025! (Holy Money Vaults, Batman!!)

As my time as president of the club comes to an end, there is a new topic of significant interest...the Metaverse. In upcoming posts you can expect to see continuing exploration of this new aspect of humanity. We'll continue to monitor the security environment reporting to you on what is published.

If you are skeptical of the Metaverse "Gucci created The Gucci Garden Experience to sell virtual products. The fashion powerhouse sold a virtual-only digital twin of a Gucci purse for a higher price than its real-world counterpart." (Accenture) If you want a look at what happened just search on Gucci and digital purse.

This from Kimkomando:

With the release of Malwarebytes’ annual State of Malware report earlier this week, it might come as a shock just how determined hackers are. A staggering 92 million consumer PCs had malware last year, as well as 22 million business computers.

The situation isn’t much better if you have a Mac. It is a common misconception that you can’t infect a Mac with malware — but look at the numbers. Last year saw a 31% increase in business attacks, with 5.2 million detections. Consumers bore the brunt of malware attempts, with 70 million detections.

Malware comes in all shapes and forms, and 2020 saw a huge variation in what hackers used. The most-used virus was Adware, with just over 32 million detections in Windows-based computers.
Trojans (23 million) and HackTools (15 million) rounded out the top three positions. Malwarebytes explains that the cryptocurrency miners declined in use, while spyware and software that collect data increased significantly.
The most common form of viruses in Macs were Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs) and Adware. Malware like backdoors, data stealers, and cryptocurrency stealers increased in use by 61% while still only representing 1.5% of all attacks.

So I've just finished taxes and have realized what a great boon a sophisticated spreadsheet can be in making tax season efficient and reducing associated stress. Any club member can access a seminar scheduled for this coming Wednesday @ 2. See your email from the club for the Zoom link.

Great presentation by Mary Kaczmarksi during our general meeting today! Thanks Mary!

Other things to think about: Covid going away? Not so fast! Even though we've had our shots, there is still a lot of virus around and there is nothing that says we have no risk. Please continue to mask and maintain social distance!

It's Not Just Us....KrebsonSecurity.com notes:

"Three Top Russian Cybercrime Forums Hacked" It appears these forums were serving thousands of experienced cybercriminals. (Serves 'em right!)

Another Interesting note from Krebs: "How $100M in Jobless claims went to Inmates". (I just shake my head...)

BTW...I'm still looking for ideas on how to best use the lab. All ideas welcome.

So for those Apple users among us: I discovered something cool...if you use more than one monitor, but only need that second one periodically, you can get it out of the flow. Simply: >System prefs>Displays>Arrangement. You can exclude a monitor simply by dragging it below the one you want to continue to use. Your cursor won't go to the one below. Turn that one off and don't worry about losing your cursor over there. Nice!

Let's talk some more about security. Daily, the news is full of a wide array of security challenges, hacks, phishing, etc. The question for individuals users is how to protect ourselves from the ever-changing threat environment. The key is "vigilance". Unfortunately we can never let our guard down. A club member contacted the help desk recently suspecting an email alert she "received" from Apple. It looked quite official but was, in fact, an effort to get her to "log in" tusiner he apple ID thereby giving the bad guys her apple crredentials. NEVER respond to something like that. If you think something may truly be wrong, independent of the message asking for your credentials, go to the concerned site and investigate. If it looks like it came from your credit card company - call that company using the number on the back of your credit card NOT the number in the "alert".

(Enough for now. Got errands:)
