There is something special about doing business in a small town.

Just like many small towns, mine has a true, American Tradition. Labor Day here in Osceola, MO is like Christmas to others. The town is on fire for each other, school has just started, the weather is still warm. Everyone is supporting each other, the rodeo is coming to town and our pride is through the roof. And this is the time that we sit back and think, how lucky are we to have a small business to be proud of this month, in this town.

You know your customers. You recognize the people walking down around the square. You see familiar faces at the ball games, festivals, parades, fundraisers, and community events.

And because of that, small-town businesses have an opportunity that big corporations simply can't replicate.

✨You don't have to have the biggest marketing budget.
✨You don't need the largest storefront.
✨You don't have to sponsor every event or say yes to every opportunity.
✨You simply have to be willing to show up.

Some months your phone won't stop ringing. Orders are flying out the door, appointments are booked solid, and business feels effortless.

Then there are the slower seasons.

Maybe it's the time of year. Maybe it's the economy. Maybe customer habits have changed. Whatever the reason, slow sales don't always mean you're doing something wrong—they're often a natural part of running a business.

The key isn't hoping slow seasons never come. It's preparing your business to weather them.

📣 Facebook has changed... again! Here's what small business owners should know.

If your posts aren't getting the same reach they used to, you're not imagining things. Facebook continues to adjust its algorithm, and a few simple changes can make a big difference.

Here are a few things I've been noticing lately:

✅ Comments matter more than likes.
Posts that start conversations tend to reach more people. Instead of asking followers to "like" your post, ask a question or invite them to share their thoughts.

✅ Original content is winning.
Facebook is prioritizing authentic photos, videos, and stories from businesses over recycled or overly promotional content.

✅ Short-form video is still king.
Reels and videos under 60 seconds continue to receive strong organic reach, especially when they grab attention in the first few seconds.

✅ Consistency beats frequency.
You don't have to post every day. Posting 2–4 quality posts each week is often more effective than posting daily just to stay active.

✅ People buy from people.
Your audience wants to see the faces behind your business. Behind-the-scenes moments, customer stories, and everyday updates often outperform polished advertisements.

✅ And of course... the dreaded automated message.
Facebook may take over your business page and send automated messages to followers who click on your images or start following you. This is a quirk that currently has NO FIX and it's super frustrating to business owners and followers alike.

💡 My biggest piece of advice: Don't chase every algorithm update. Focus on creating content that educates, entertains, or solves a problem for your audience. When you consistently provide value, the algorithm becomes much less intimidating.

This Independence Day, I'm grateful for the freedom to dream, create, and build something meaningful. From family farms and local shops to hometown restaurants and service providers, small businesses are the heart of our communities. They create jobs, support local families, and keep the American dream alive.

Today, we celebrate the freedoms we've been given and the entrepreneurs who use those freedoms to make a difference every day.

I've been hearing it from every industry....

June has been SLOW. Like questioning slow. Like squirm in your chair slow.

Don't panic! Summer is historically a slow time for small businesses that are unrelated to the hospitality industry. Local, year-round service and retail businesses may see a slump in June and July.

This is a great time of the year to focus on systems, processes and plan for the remainder of 2026.
