The Weekly Tech Tune-UP

Sorry for being a day late. In our first week we covered the difference between Wi-Fi and Internet. Then we covered how to tell if a Connection problem was on your end or your ISP. Last week we covered how to trouble shout Customer owned Device. This week will cover some of the same for your ISP owned Device.

what should you do befor calling your ISP.
Before calling your Internet Service Provider (ISP), you should power cycle your modem and router to rule out temporary local hardware glitches.Performing basic checks first will prevent you from spending unnecessary time waiting on hold or walking through basic troubleshooting steps with a phone support representative.

1. Perform Basic Hardware Troubleshooting.
A)Power cycle everything: Unplug the power cords of both your modem and router. Wait at least 30 seconds. Plug the modem back in first, wait for its lights to stabilize, then plug in the router.(In most cases with you ISP the Modem and Router will be the same device.)
B)Verify the cables: Check that the coaxial, ethernet, or fiber cables going into the back of your equipment and wall jacks are firmly clicked into place.
C)Note the status lights: Look at the indicator lights on your modem. Note if symbols for "Internet," "WAN," or "Online" are blinking, unlit, or red.
2. Isolate the Scope of the Problem.
A)Test multiple devices: See if the internet is down on your phone, laptop, and smart TV. If only one device fails, the issue is with that device, not your ISP.
B)Bypass the Wi-Fi: If possible, plug a computer directly into your modem using an Ethernet cable. If the connection works via cable, your internet service is fine, but your wireless router is malfunctioning.
C)Run a speed test: If your connection is just slow rather than completely dead, go to a site like Ookla Speedtest or Fast.com. Write down your download and upload speeds to report to the representative.
3. Check for Outages and Account Issues.
A)Look up local outages: Use your smartphone's cellular data to check your provider’s official app, their service status webpage, or a third-party tracker like Downdetector to see if there is a known area-wide outage.
B)Check your account status: Log in to your ISP’s customer portal. Ensure that a missed payment or billing error hasn't triggered an automatic service suspension.
4. Gather Necessary InformationBefore dialing, have the following information handy to bypass long verification steps:
A)Account holder details: The full name, service address, account number, and the account pin/password.Equipment details:
B)The brand and model numbers written on the stickers of your modem and router.
C)Your troubleshooting log: A quick list of what you already tried (e.g., "I already restarted the hardware and tested a wired connection")

The Weekly Tech Tune-Up
Is your internet buffering during movie night, dropping video calls, or crawling at a snail's pace? Before you sit on hold with your internet service provider (ISP), the culprit might be sitting right on your desk: your home router.

Here is a simple, step-by-step checklist to diagnose and fix home router issues before calling tech support.

1. Interpret the Status Lights
Look closely at the LED icons on the front of your router. They provide immediate feedback on what is failing.

Solid Green/Blue: Normal, healthy operation.

Blinking Amber/Orange: The router is booting up, updating firmware, or trying to establish a connection.

Solid Red: Critical error—usually means no internet signal from your modem/ISP or a hardware failure.

Unlit Indicators: Power delivery issue or a loose connection.

2. Check Physical Connections & Placement
Physical setup problems cause more network issues than software bugs.

Cables: Ensure the Ethernet cable from your modem (or Fiber ONT) is firmly clicked into the router's WAN/Internet port. Check power cords for loose plugs.

Heat: Feel the top and bottom vents. Excessive heat can cause internal chips to throttle or reboot. Ensure it sits in an open area, not tucked inside an enclosed cabinet.

Interference: Keep the router elevated and away from large metal objects, thick concrete walls, or interference sources like microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors.

3. Perform the Classic Power Cycle
Restarting clears out temporary memory leaks, overloaded routing tables, and stale IP assignments.

Unplug the power cables from both your modem and router.

Wait a full 30 seconds to let the capacitors drain completely.

Plug the modem back in first and wait 2 to 3 minutes for all its lights to settle.

Plug the router back in and wait until the Wi-Fi indicators turn solid. (Modem and Router May be same device)

4. Test Wired vs. Wireless Connections
Isolate whether the problem affects the entire network or just Wi-Fi.

Plug a laptop directly into one of the router's LAN ports using an Ethernet cable.

If internet works over Ethernet but fails on Wi-Fi, your network signal or wireless configuration is at fault.

If Ethernet also fails, the issue lies with your modem, incoming ISP signal, or WAN settings.

5. Access the Admin Dashboard
Log into your router's Web Interface or companion mobile app (e.g., Netgear Nighthawk, Asus Router, Eero) to inspect software settings.

Gateway IP: Open a browser and type your router's IP address (commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).

Connected Devices: Check the attached device list for unknown freeloaders stealing bandwidth.

Firmware Updates: Look for pending software updates. Outdated firmware can cause security vulnerabilities and instability.

Channel Congestion: If on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, use an app like Wi-Fi Analyzer to find an uncrowded channel if your router isn't selecting one automatically.

When all else fails, locate the tiny Reset hole on the back of the device. Use a paperclip to press and hold it for 10–15 seconds to restore factory default settings—just keep in mind this will erase your custom Wi-Fi network name and password. (If Modem/Router is owned by your ISP call them before you reset)

We get a lot of call and questions from customers having problems “Getting online”. We always need to figure out if it is on your side or your Internet Service Provider (ISP). The first thig to know is the Difference between Wi-Fi and Internet.

It is easy to use "Wi-Fi" and "Internet" interchangeably. When your connection drops, you might say "the Wi-Fi is down" when you actually mean your internet service is out. While they work together seamlessly to keep you connected, they are two completely different technologies.

Here is a quick breakdown to help you understand how they differ, how they work together, and how to troubleshoot connection issues.

What Is the Internet? (Your ISP Responsibility)
The Internet is a massive, worldwide network of millions of computers, servers, routers, and data centers linked together via physical cables (undersea fiber-optic cables, phone lines, coax) and satellite links.

Think of the internet as a global highway system. It allows your device to request and receive information from servers located anywhere in the world—whether you are streaming a movie, checking email, or browsing web pages. Your connection to this highway is provided by an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

What Is Wi-Fi? (Your Responsibility)
Wi-Fi is simply a method for connecting devices wirelessly over short distances using radio waves.

Think of Wi-Fi as the bridge or local driveway connecting your device (phone, laptop, smart TV) to your home router. Instead of plugging an Ethernet cable into your phone, Wi-Fi sends data through the air between your device and your router.

Wi-Fi without Internet: You can have a fully functional Wi-Fi network with no internet access. For instance, you can use Wi-Fi to print a document wirelessly from your laptop to a home printer or stream local media files between devices, even if your ISP has an outage.

How They Work Together
To browse the web wirelessly, both technologies work as a team:

Your Device sends a request via Wi-Fi (radio signals) to your wireless router.

Your Router receives the signal and sends it through a physical cable (modem/line) to your Internet Service Provider.

The Internet routes your request to the target server anywhere in the world and sends the data back to your modem.

Your Router transmits that data wirelessly back to your device via Wi-Fi.

Troubleshooting: Is It a Wi-Fi Issue or an Internet Issue?
When your connection stops working, identifying which layer is failing saves time:

It’s a Wi-Fi problem if: Your device shows a weak signal icon, won't connect to your router's wireless network, or disconnects frequently. Restarting your router or moving closer to it usually helps.

It’s an Internet problem if: Your device is connected to Wi-Fi with a strong signal, but pages won't load and you see messages like "Connected, no internet." This usually means your ISP is experiencing an outage or your modem needs a restart.
