This month’s coffee shop highlight comes from CEO Dave Berck, and his pick is a throwback. Dave’s spot is PT’s Coffee, which used to occupy the student union at KU Edwards Campus. Level Five was a fully remote workplace at the time (before it was common or cool) and met at PT’s when the team needed an occasional in-person collaboration spot.

The team’s barista back then was Pete Licata, who went on to win the World Barista Championship in 2013. Dave and crew were Pete’s willing guinea pigs as he developed competition-worthy drinks and tried them out on the team. PT’s has since been replaced by a LaMar’s, but here’s a photo from when Dave, UX director Jeff Swartz, and former L5 designer Jessica De La Cruz returned years later to sit at L5's old table one more time.

This month's coffee shop highlight comes from project manager Cait Frisbie. Her pick is HITIDES Coffee in the Crossroads. Hitides brings vacation vibes straight to the heart of Kansas City, with tropical-flavored donuts, inventive drinks, and a laid-back atmosphere. Cait's go-to order is the Luxardo Latte, a blend of cherry and mocha syrup, espresso, and milk.

Beyond the drinks and donuts, Hitides keeps things interesting with a rotating lineup of events, including traditional Polynesian dance performances and open mic nights.

This month’s coffee shop highlight comes from content strategy director Alicia Dewey. Alicia’s pick is Sisters Coffee Company in Sisters, OR, a fun and funky town of about 3000 people, located at the foot of the Cascade Range.

Alicia discovered Sisters Coffee during a 2024 trip to central Oregon and has been looking for an excuse to go back ever since. In the meantime, she’ll have to be content with getting Sisters Coffee delivered to Kansas via their coffee subscription and wearing her comfy and beloved Sisters Coffee t-shirt, which is in steady rotation in her wardrobe.

This month’s coffee shop highlight comes from developer Dustin Walkup. His pick is Front Range Coffeehouse & Provisions in Brookside.

Front Range brings a laid-back, mountain-inspired vibe to Kansas City. In addition to serving unique signature coffee drinks, the space offers a full bar and houses a curated shop stocked with locally made goods from brands in and around Kansas City, making it an easy place to linger.

Dustin’s go-to order is a locally sourced iced latte (beans are always from local roasters) paired with a made-from-scratch biscuit sandwich. Simple, local, and exactly the kind of combination that makes a neighborhood spot worth coming back to.
