Earth Day is a good reminder that old tech should be handled responsibly β both environmentally and securely.
Before a desktop, laptop, or hard drive gets recycled, donated, or repurposed, your data needs to be handled first; Deleted files are not the same thing as proper sanitation.
Some systems still have value in secondary roles. When they do not, secure disposal matters.
A better process looks like this:
β’ Back up anything important
β’ Sanitize the device properly
β’ Reuse or repurpose hardware when it still has life left
β’ Recycle responsibly when it does not
