When your team's machines start to crawl, it impacts productivity and security. But how do you know when to swap out a few parts versus replacing the whole thing?

When to UPGRADE:

-It’s less than 4 years old: The core parts are still good, it just needs a little boost.

-It just needs speed or storage: Swapping an old mechanical hard drive for a lightning-fast Solid State Drive (SSD) or adding more RAM can make a 3-year-old computer feel brand new for a fraction of the price.

-It’s secure: The computer can still easily download the latest security patches and software updates.

When to REPLACE:

-It’s 10+ years old: At this point, the hardware is reaching the end of its natural lifespan.

-It’s constantly crashing or overheating: This usually means major hardware components (like the motherboard or processor) are failing.

-It can’t run modern software: If a machine is too old to update to modern operating systems, it becomes a massive security risk for your business data.

Holding onto ancient tech often costs more in the long run through lost productivity, employee frustration, and security vulnerabilities.

It’s 115°F outside, the office AC is roaring, and suddenly…your screen freezes. No email. No cloud access. No credit card processing. 🥵🔌

When your office internet drops in the middle of a workday, every minute of downtime costs you money. But before you spend 45 minutes on hold with Spectrum or Frontier, you can figure out the culprit yourself.

Here is a quick, 3-step test to see if the issue is your local router or your internet provider:

1. The "One vs. All" Check: Is it just your computer, or is everyone in the office offline? If it's just you, it’s a local device or internal network issue. If the whole office is down, move to step 2.

2. Look at the Lights: Walk over to your modem (the box connected to the wall). Are the "Online," "Sync," or "Internet" lights blinking red, amber, or completely dark? If yes, the neighborhood line is likely down. If they are solid green, your provider is delivering data, but your router isn't distributing it.

3. The Direct Bypass: If you can, plug an Ethernet cable directly from a laptop (or, if it's close enough, desktop) into the back of the modem, bypassing your router entirely. If you suddenly have internet, your router is the problem. If you still have nothing, it's the provider.

Quick Tip: Our Coachella Valley heat doesn't just exhaust people, it exhausts hardware. If your router or network switch is shoved into a cramped, un-ventilated closet, it can overheat and drop connections constantly.

Residents and visitors to the Coachella Valley are being actively targeted by several localized phishing scams 😡 here are the top scams targeting the valley:

Festival & Housing Fraud: According to the Riverside Countty District attorney, scammers exploit the high demand for short-term rentals and concerts by posting fake property listings or selling invalid tickets across local forums. Additionally, reservation "hijacking" has been reported where hackers steal legitimate hotel information to send highly specific, targeted phishing emails to guests regarding their upcoming bookings.

Utility & Government Impersonation: First reported by NBC Palm Springs, local law enforcement and utility companies have issued warnings about fake Southern California Edison (SCE) flyers and fraudulent texts impersonating the California DMV or the California Highway Patrol. These scams threaten victims with urgent payment demands or fees for fake pass-through tickets.

Imposter Scams: Scammers frequently use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to clone the voices of local residents' loved ones to demand emergency wire transfers. There have also been high-profile cases of fraudsters posing as celebrities to target seniors in the Valley, coercing them into sending untraceable funds.

Old computers slowing your business down?🐢It may be time to upgrade! But what does that mean for your older hardware?

While recycling is a great option, what happens to your old customer data? How can you know someone at the recycling plant won't just pull your hard drives and steal your data? The truth is: you don't.

So what are our options? We utilize 2 different tools that adhere to the Department of Defense standards for data destruction: DBAN and shredOS. Both can be put on a bootable USB stick and can be used to write over the existing data multiple times to ensure the client data is no longer readable.

DBAN is perfectly fine for older systems, however if you're decommissioning newer hardware, shredOS is the way to go. If your business would like assistance with wiping and recycling old hardware, give us a call!

A client had called reporting an overheating laptop. When we got it in, we did a check of the internal temperatures immediately shut the machine down. 😱

Idling at 85+ degrees Celsius is a huge indicator of a cooling issue. While that could mean any number of things, the first thing you should do or have a professional do is reapply thermal paste. This may not be the only fix, but 9 times out of 10 its enough to bring your temperatures more in line with what is considered normal.

For this particular client, his heatsink wasn't even making contact with the back of the processor anymore. After reapplying and putting the machine back together, his average temps dropped by about 20C, a much better number. It's hot and dry out here in the Coachella Valley, so if you suspect your laptop or even desktop may be overheating, why not give us a call? Had a client call with an unresponsive keyboard for a laptop and...well...complete rebuild of the laptop had to occur to install this keyboard.
