***DON’T BE A SCAM VICTIM***
PLEASE SHARE:
We have been made aware of scammers changing their caller ID to make it appear that the Parsippany Police Department is calling and requesting personal information and/or payments via gift cards. They will threaten you with arrest if you do not provide the requested information and/or gift card information.
***AGAIN THIS IS A SCAM DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION OR PURCHASE GIFT CARDS AS REQUESTED BY THE SCAMMERS.***
Have you received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Parsippany Police Department, IRS, Immigration, or some other type of government agency? Have they tried to get personal information from you and/or advised you that you have an outstanding warrant or fine and requested immediate payment in lieu of arrest? You are not alone!
We have seen an increase of residents being victimized by these scammers who usually request for you go to specific stores and purchase iTunes Gift Cards, Green Dot MoneyPak Cards, or other types of gift cards. The scammers usually advise the victim that if they fail to comply immediately with the request, the police will arrest them. These scammers use different techniques, such as spoofing their caller ID names and numbers to make it appear as a legitimate call, such as identifying the name on the caller ID as the Parsippany Police Department. When in doubt, hang up and locate their official number from their website or documents you may have and call that number. In 2016, residents were scammed out of more than $100,000 by these types of scams!
AGAIN, PLEASE DO NOT BECOME A VICTIM. Government agencies do not accept payment via gift card or threatens immediate arrest unless a payment is made over the phone. If you do become a victim, please contact us at our non-emergency number 973-263-4300.
