If you ever receive an email, phone call, text message, or any type of communication where the person is trying to rush you into making a decision — assume it is a scam. In nearly every case, urgency is the tactic used to bypass your judgment.

Be especially cautious if someone:

* Pressures you to act immediately
* Asks for remote access to your computer, tablet, or phone
* Demands payment right away
* Claims a family emergency (such as a child in an accident) and asks for money

These are classic scam indicators.

Legitimate organizations do not operate this way. They do not create panic, demand instant action, or request sensitive access without proper verification.

If something feels off, trust that instinct.

You are always welcome to contact Paso Robles Tech for a second opinion. We are happy to review suspicious messages or requests and help you determine whether they are legitimate.

For example, one of the latest scams I encountered this week was a Venmo request that appeared legitimate at first glance but had nothing to do with Venmo at all.

When in doubt, pause. Verify. Ask.

Paso Robles Warns Residents About Drinking Water Scam
Alert PhotoScammers are going door-to-door claiming the City’s water supply is contaminated. The Scammers often claim City tap water is contaminated with wastewater or recycled water. This claim is false.

PASO ROBLES, CA – The City of Paso Robles is warning the public about a drinking water scam. Scammers are going door-to-door claiming the City’s water supply is contaminated. The Scammers often claim City tap water is contaminated with wastewater or recycled water. This claim is false. City tap water is not contaminated and is safe for drinking and use. The City regularly tests the water quality to ensure the water consistently meets all health and safety standards.

Scammers are urging residents to avoid using or drinking City tap water without additional treatment. The Scammers sometimes use a water test that appears to show water contamination. The Scammers then attempt to sell water treatment devices based on misleading claims about the test.

Residents are reminded that information regarding City water quality will always come from official City communication channels. Any questions about water safety should be directed to the Paso Robles Utilities Department at (805) 237.3864.

If you experience suspicious or unsafe interactions, please report them to the Paso Robles Police Department’s non-emergency line at (805) 237-6464 or call 911 in an emergency.

For more information, please contact the City of Paso Robles Utilities Department at 805.237.3864 or visit www.prcity.com/424/About-Our-Water.

Don't Let Scammers Ruin Your Summer! "Smishing" scams are on the rise.

"Smishing" is a form of phishing that uses text messages instead of email. In this scam, fraudsters send texts that look like they’re from a legitimate company in an effort to trick you into giving up your personal or financial information. These messages often seem credible because they claim to be from familiar services, such as a shipping company or toll agency. They typically include a link and prompt you to click it, leading to a site where you're asked to enter sensitive details like payment info.

Don't be a victim.

Paso Robles Tech offers services to help educate you and/or your staff about fraudsters attempts to steal your money. We also keep your computer system clear of malicious software. Visit www.PasoTech.com to learn more.

SCAM ALERT! From PG&E today...

Dear Valued Customer:

Scams targeting utility customers continue to increase at an alarming rate. Scammers can be convincing and often target those who are most vulnerable. They also aim their scams at small business owners during busy customer service hours. However, with the right information, you can learn to detect and report these predatory scams.

Scammers often:

Ask for payment in unconventional ways such as pre-paid debit cards, gift cards, or third-party mobile payment applications. PG&E will not ask you to use any of these to pay a bill. Visit our Ways to Pay to learn all the authorized ways you can pay.

Threaten to disconnect your power because of past due bills if payment is not made immediately.

Ask for Social Security, credit card or PG&E account numbers, logins, and other personal information.

Create authentic looking 800 numbers which appear as PG&E on your phone display. If you have doubts, hang up and call PG&E at 1-833-500-SCAM.
How you can protect yourself

Never purchase a prepaid card to avoid service disconnection or shutoff. Visit our Ways to Pay to learn all the authorized ways you can pay your bill.

If a person threatens immediate disconnection or shutoff of service without prior notification, you should hang up the phone, delete the email, or shut the door.

Signing up for an online account at pge.com is another safeguard. Not only can you log in to check your balance and payment history, you can also sign up for recurring payments, paperless billing and helpful alerts.

If you suspect you have been the victim of fraud or feel threatened during contact with a scammer, contact local law enforcement.

For more information about scams and how to protect yourself, visit the PG&E Scams page or the Federal Trade Commission’s website.

Sincerely,
PG&E Customer Care Team
