Hope Bindery & Box Company

Hope Bindery & Box Company An all encompassing hand bindery versed in all types of binding from rare book restoration, limited editions, albums, portfolios, thesis documents and more

Hope Bindery was established in 1988 after owner Jim DiMarcantonio graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Illustration. Jim mostly taught himself the craft of binding, and over the years he strongly believes this has allowed him to "think outside the box". This approach provides efficient, no nonsense solutions to binding problems while still exhibiting a sense of care and pride that comes with come one who finds great joy in his work.

More old work to show! We made this box back in the fall for the Simmons Center at Brown University. This box organizes ten plus years of exhibition catalogs from the center. There a few different cloth bound slipcases to hold the catalogs along with a small folio listing the contents. The outer slipcase is wrapped in a beautiful goat skin with gold stamping and some hand tooling finish work!

We had the absolute pleasure of hosting artist Martha Poggioli at the studio last week to work hands on designing, prototyping and putting into production an edition of boxes to hold 1:1 cast bronze replicas of a roman era contraceptive.

The box lid also has a double-hinged compartment with a magnet closure to hold some printed ephemera to go along with the objects!

It was such a delight being able to work with Martha so closely. Would LOVE to do more of this!

love love love wood engravings, especially in old children’s books like this! It was in rough shape and had been glued with a thick cement of some sort, but we were able to rescue the spine with some careful spatula work.

We also put a new leather spine on this copy of Men of Massachusetts (LOTS of good mustaches in there!)

This one is from close to a year ago now, but most definitely worth posting. These four flap folios were used as special invitation for the Bal d’Été at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs last July. The interior and exterior graphics are reproductions of wallpapers held in the museums collection. Also some wonderful letterpress work from
