Occasionette is a fantastic area store, with good insight into A recent industry bankruptcy. Shop Hopwell’s local card shops dandelion wishes and twine.
Hi everyone! I wanted to take a moment to chat about what is going on with Paper Source and the independent stationery community right now. You may have heard that Paper Source declared bankruptcy last week. The most upsetting part is prior to filing, Paper Source placed massive orders with hundreds of card makers (the same makers we buy from for our shops) and rushed ship dates so orders would arrive before they declared, to bolster assets at the time they filed.
Many of you know that until a few years ago in addition to running the shops, I was also a maker, selling tea towels wholesale, mostly to small shops around the country, but also to big retailers like Crate & Barrel, Nordstrom, Anthropologie, and, yes, Paper Source. I will tell you that as a maker, orders from national retailers require lots of resources - you do whatever you can to order materials, you put in all the extra hours you need to ship on time, you do so much paperwork on top of the work that it takes to produce the order. Fulfilling an order like the ones Paper Source placed these past few weeks is a beast. But you do it because you believe it’s good and right for your business, even though maybe they negotiated some kind of discount or the deadline seems unreasonable, and you do it on good faith that you’ll get paid in 60 or 90 days because that’s how these orders work. For me it felt like a huge accomplishment, not only getting each of those orders out, but just getting those orders in the first place.
Our hearts and minds are with our maker friends right now. We are doing what we can - placing orders with the small businesses who were taken advantage of by Paper Source. I’ve tagged many of them here if you want to support them directly.
I really wanted to take a moment to thank you for all your support of our shop over the years. We aren’t a chain of 158 stores, like Paper Source, but we have three locations and a webshop and we’re able to place orders on a regular basis with hundreds of small maker businesses around the country every month. And that’s because of you. So thank you for helping us support our friends and fellow makers. Shopping small matters. 💕
