Dr. Romeo B. Garrett was one of the first three people to receive a degree in Bradley University's newly established master's degree program. Dr. Garrett went on to become Bradley's first African-American professor.

An avid collector of black history memorabilia, Dr. Garrett amassed a collection so vast that the Peoria Public Library has exhibited a sampling of it annually for the past 20 years.

While at Bradley, Dr. Garrett encouraged administrators to hire more black teachers and staff, and brought prominent blacks to lecture or perform on campus.

Dr. James Bazell Stafford Jr. was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Administration Corps. He served in WWII as one of the first officers to staff the 335th Station "All Black" Hospital (something unheard of at that time) in Burma.

After serving two tours of duty, Dr. Bazell and his wife Evelyn eventually moved to Peoria where James ran a thriving optometry practice. While in Peoria, the Stafford's joined the NAACP and fought against segregation.

James later went on to become the first African-American president of the Illinois Optometric Association and Peoria's first black City Councilman.
