Most 8 way Dpads are implemented as hat switches
For example, the Dual Action controller only has one element for the Dpad. Values on that element are for pressed: up is 0, down is 4 left is 6, right is 3, and released is 8 for all.

Analog sticks have different max and min values. Some use 0 to 255 while others use -32768 to 32767 (right). It is important to always access this from a normalized value like -1 to 1 to keep values consistent between controllers.
