Cutting the cord
Vol. 2
Windows 7/8 Mediacenter
This week we will talk about Windows 7/8 Media Center (referred to as MCE going forward in the article) and how you can use this tool to cut the cord and not miss a beat, and the best part is you already have it!
MCE is one of my personal favs when it come to cutting the cord. So many thing can be done with it and with a little know how or help it can quickly become the true center piece of any home theater.
The best way to get started with you own MCE is to build or have it built. From the ground up, but if that is not an option any computer running vista (shame on you) or Win 7 will do. Even a respectable laptop. I am however assuming that you have at this point a flat panel TV with a VGA/DVI/HDMI connection. You'll need that. Then it's off you go.
With the addition of a few parts to round the hole thing out, Digital TV tuner, MCE Remote (or wireless keyboard/mouse) & IR Blaster if your keeping Some cable. You will be able to watch live TV, watch Web only programming (webasodes), Netflix, Hulu Plus, iTunes, Amazon instant video "downloaded content" & and much more. Not only that, but you can record that live broadcasts and use them at your discretion. Saving them for future viewing burn them to DVD or Blu-ray, even post online!
The best part is, just about every Win 7, Vista & select Win XP systems have it built in for free! The addition of the TV tuner can be done for under $50 in some cases. After all that, it is still a full computer! Able to surf the net, play PC games, do work and all on a 42" or whatever you have TV.
Watch, record, save, burn, share TV anyway you want. Load it up to you smartphone or tablet and save yourself the $15 a month "they" charge you for the DVR. Next article we'll discuss the Roku Player, how does it compare to the offerings from Microsoft and Apple, wait here.
K2D score 9/10, must have when cutting the cord!
