Just wanted to share something that happened to me today so no one else falls for it.
This morning, I updated my browser (iOS is updated) and had Facebook open on another “desktop” (Mac users, you know how you can have multiple screens open). When I switched over to my Facebook window/desktop, a scary-looking pop-up appeared that looked exactly like a Windows Security alert — it said “Your computer is infected, don’t restart, call Microsoft Support immediately.”
For a second, I panicked. But after noticing that all my other tabs and websites were still working fine, I realized something wasn’t right. That’s when it clicked — it was a scam popup, not a real system alert.
I took a screenshot and ran it through AI, and sure enough, it confirmed that it was a fake tech support scam designed to trick people into calling a fake “Microsoft Support” number.
Here’s what to do (and NOT do) if this ever happens to you:
✅ What to do:
Stay calm — don’t call any number listed in the pop-up.
Force quit your browser (on a Mac: press Command + Option + Esc, select your browser, then “Force Quit”).
Reopen your browser while holding the Shift key — this prevents reopening the fake page.
Clear your browser cache/history to remove any lingering scripts.
Run a quick malware scan (Malwarebytes, CleanMyMac are good options).
🚫 What NOT to do:
Don’t call the number — it’s not Microsoft, it’s a scam center.
Don’t click anything or download any files.
Don’t give anyone remote access to your computer.
These fake alerts are becoming more common on Facebook and random websites, especially after updates. They’re designed to look legit — but remember, Microsoft or Apple will never display support phone numbers in pop-ups.
Stay safe out there and share this post so more people know what to look out for! 🦛💻✨
