When I was growing up, "nerds" were almost exclusively males whom most females/women didn't want anything to do with because of their "uncool" interests, hobbies, and (perceived) social awkwardness. It was a culture that was only inclusive of like-minded males.
But this changed with the advent of social media. Though I don't doubt some females have a genuine interest in Geek Culture (due to comic-based movies becoming mainstreamed), now, with so many females using this platform to seek attention, invading "Nerdom," as it were, has become yet another vehicle they can use to expand their base of attention. In effect, it has become another example of invading male spaces to suit personal agendas...attention-seeking.
