The latest industry data from the 2026 Wasabi Global Cloud Storage Index is here, and it reveals healthcare organizations are betting big on AI, even though many AI projects have yet to deliver positive returns.

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of healthcare organizations expect their AI budgets to increase over the next year, even though more than a quarter (27%) of AI projects are currently operating at a loss.

The cost of data and compute infrastructure is a major factor behind this gap, with 43% of healthcare organizations citing high or unpredictable cloud storage costs as a top challenge in managing AI initiatives.

As these costs become harder to control, many healthcare organizations are rethinking their storage strategies. In fact, 73% now use more than one public cloud storage provider, while 65% are pursuing hybrid storage deployments to gain greater flexibility, optimize spending, and maintain control over their data.
