Chinese-manufactured robots pose significant national security and data privacy threats, primarily centered on espionage, remote hijacking, and supply chain vulnerabilities. U.S. lawmakers and cybersecurity experts have identified the following primary areas of concern:
Espionage and Data Harvesting: Equipped with cameras, microphones, and LiDAR sensors, Chinese robots act as mobile surveillance platforms. Security researchers have found that models from companies like Unitree transmit audio and visual data to servers in China. Due to China's National Intelligence Law, these companies are legally compelled to cooperate with state intelligence and share collected data.
Hidden Backdoors: Cybersecurity investigations have identified critical vulnerabilities (such as CVE-2025-2894) and hidden backdoors in consumer robotics, allowing unauthorized remote access and global surveillance.
Remote Hijacking: Researchers discovered critical flaws in Bluetooth protocols and hard-coded encryption keys that allow attackers to wirelessly hijack robotic systems, gain root-level control, and potentially turn devices against their operators.
Botnet Capabilities: A compromised robot can be used to infect other nearby devices, creating localized botnets.
Government Action and Response To mitigate these risks, the U.S. government is increasingly moving to restrict the presence of Chinese-made robotics in sensitive sectors. Bipartisan legislation—such as the American Security Robotics Act proposed by Senators Tom Cotton and Chuck Schumer—aims to forbid federal agencies from using government funds to purchase or operate humanoid robots manufactured by adversarial nations.
