Gabriel Park in SW . Normally a great place to take in the setting sun. Today, not so much. The sun disappeared into the smokey haze well before reaching the horizon. It’s already been a bad in the West, and it’s nowhere near over yet.

There are no roads to Venetie, AK. Everything they have from the outside world gets there by plane. As you can imagine, that gets expensive (see pic #4 if you want to know just how expensive). Not much use for cars there, so they get around on ATVs. Despite the cost of gas, the were all too happy to help us get our team and our gear around the village, including the mile between the airstrip and the base camp. Just another example of the generosity and community spirit of the Gwich’in!

I have no idea how it derived its name, but this lonely little airstrip beside the (yes, that stretch of dirt, gravel and holes is referred to as a highway) is where we flew into the from. As airports go, I’d rate it 2 stars on Yelp. It was sorely lacking in coffee shops, restrooms and souvenirs. On the plus side, the scenery is tough to beat, and the (nonexistent) TSA security lines were as smooth and efficient as I’ve ever seen. Do something about the mosquitoes and I’ll bump my review up to 3 stars.

That moment you realize you were dropped in the middle of nowhere...

I was on the first plane into the with Carl Combs. As our bush pilot Matt (shout out to Silvertip Aviation!) disappeared into the vast expanse, the first thing Carl and I commented on was the sense of complete isolation that came over us. It was both exhilarating and humbling. A moment that will stay with me forever.

Can’t remember the last time I had so much salmon. Thank you so much to the Gwich’in people of Venetie for being the best hosts ever. We need to learn their story and how their way of life is being threatened by Arctic drilling.
