Client: Catapult Film Fund provides developmental funding to documentary filmmakers—enabling them to take their film projects to the next level at a time when funding is hard to find. Catapult supports powerful stories, and moving storytelling, across a broad spectrum of issues and perspectives.

Project: Catapult needed a website that could both feature their current projects and support their ever-expanding roster of talented filmmakers. We teamed up with Experience Lab (www.experiencelabpdx.com) to design and develop a website geared for growth and flexible enough to accommodate as much, or as little, information that individual filmmakers are able to provide.

Connection: Erin O'Brien, working for Sockeye at the time, recommended me for the job. The non-profit Catapult didn't have the budget to hire the agency. Ms. O'Brien recommended Robin Stevens of Experience Lab as an amazing content strategist.

Catapult Film Fund provides early funding to documentary filmmakers who have a compelling story to tell, have secured access to their story and are ready to shoot and edit a trailer/reel for production fundraising purposes. Our mission is to enable filmmakers to develop their film projects to the ne...

Client: Objects is a travelogue: the world as seen through the eyes of designer Pamela Peterson. It is both a record of her travels and a repository of her collected treasures, tales, pictures, and inspiration.

Project: We brought to life this minimalistic design created by Tracie Designs (. The white background and lack of distracting periphera is remniscent of many fine museums. This museum happens to feature the gorgeous travel photography (and commentary) of Pamela Peterson.

Connection: Ms. Peterson was a one-time client of my friend and colleague Jason Hughes (www.1976inc.com). Mr. Hughes had started working for a new company, didn't have time to devote to the project, and recommended me for the job.

The treasures, the tales, the pictures, the characters, the inspiration all find a home base in a blog, and a brand, called Objects. The dictionary defines “object” as a thing, a being, or a purpose. The object of the blog, and the brand, is to share the objects I discover…and to surprise, intrigue,...

Client: Jessica Helgerson Interior Design is a Portland-based firm whose mission is to create beautiful, livable spaces that both thrill their clients and respect the environment.

Project: In this iteration of her website, Ms. Helgerson requested larger, juicier images and the ability to edit the copy whenever she felt the need. The new site—featuring two distinct portfolios that span twenty-nine gorgeous projects—was built in the popular blogging software WordPress which, here, serves as a handy CMS.

Connection: Jessica was referred to me by Fruit & Flower (www.fruitandflower.org), a pro bono site I worked on for years while my kids attended their daycare.

We are a Portland, Oregon-based interior design firm. Our mission is to create beautiful, livable spaces that meet our clients' aesthetic, functional, and economic goals, while respecting the environment.

Through code and script, we made it a richly interactive experience. The responsive design was implemented by Bryce Jackson. Fonts are courtesy of Typekit (www.typekit.com).

Connection: My wife worked for Sockeye.

Client: Moveable Type is a mobile print shop built into the back of a 1982 Chevy step van. In June 2011, letterpress artist Kyle Durrie embarked on a year-long tour—criss-crossing North America to spread the love and share her enthusiasm for printing the old fashioned way.

Project: Ms. Durrie needed a socially interactive website to chronicle her continuing adventures. We worked with the Bureau of Betterment (www.bureauofbetterment.com) to design a site that features a road blog, tour dates, maps, and videos. The site allows visitors to subscribe to the blog, request a visit, and even contribute to the project. Pretty fonts are courtesy of Typekit (www.typekit.com).

Connection: Mette Hornung Rankin of the Bureau of Betterment worked with my wife at Sockeye.

Meet Cassie – aka Cowsie, aka Couchie, aka Turkey, aka Scooper. Cassie is an old friend from college (actually, she’s 7 days younger than I am, which makes her VERY young). She lives in Maine in a beautiful house with her love (and my dear friend) Mark, and their cat Scout, who is black and white....

Client: Wild Goose Farm is a 5-acre family farm on Sauvie Island in Portland, Oregon. They are involved in a kind of public homesteading, learning as they go and sharing the fruits of that knowledge by making and serving good things to eat.

Project: Farmer Doulis wanted a website to document his small farm where he and his family raise animals; gather honey and eggs; grow a wide variety of vegetables and fruits; make artisan cheeses and beverages; host farm-related workshops; and throw fabulous outdoor dinners for friends and family. The website is appropriately small, colorful, and inviting.

Connection: Para-farming is the second vocation of my client Yianni Doulis.

We are a 5-acre family farm on Sauvie Island that wants to share the adventure of eating the food we grow with others. We are involved in a kind of public homesteading, learning as we go and sharing the fruits of that knowledge by making and serving good things to eat.

Client: PDX11 is a grassroots initiative led by the software and technology community of Portland, Oregon, and supported by resources from both the Portland Development Commission and the mayor’s office. They aim to put Portland on the global map as the place to go when looking for software talent and investment opportunities.

Project: PDX11 needed a cleanly designed and well-organized web presence to promote their burgeoning organization. We slimmed down their presentation to an easily digestible website. Imagery was graciously donated by the mighty Lincoln Barbour (www.lincolnbarbourphotography.com).

Connection: I was referred to Coordinator Kris Wetzel by my wife, Erin O'Brien.

Client: Sheryl Rodrigue "Sherri" Culver is an extremely talented, award-winning quilting artist based in Moreland Hills, Ohio. This is her third career.

Project: Ms. Culver needed a website to display over a decade’s worth of her richly colored and intricately detailed quilting. The portfolio features 58 quilts and is sortable by date, series, pattern, collection, type, and technique. The site was built in WordPress using a customized version of the Grid.A.Licious theme.

Connection: Sherri is my mom.

Client: The Rock Wood-fired Pizza & Spirits opened in 1995 as a gritty, local pizza joint in Tacoma, Washington. Today, the Rock is a family-focused, full-service casual dining concept serving an array of food and drinks from locations across Washington State and as well as Colorado and Canada.

Project: The Rock wanted a website that reflected the character of their rock-n-roll-themed restaurant franchise. We produced a site, designed by the Rock, which features a music player, rolling news ticker, full menu, and information on all 13 of their locations. The site was built in WordPress for easy client-side editing.

Connection: I was referred to this project by Von Glitschka.

Client: Alison O’Donoghue is a Portland-based contemporary folk artist. Her work features the playful next to the sinister, giving the paintings a sense of humor and the complexity of an unfolding story.

Project: For Ms. O’Donoghue, we designed a series of galleries, standardizing the widths of the artwork to give a sense of order to her vibrant, prolific output. The bottoms of the pages are populated by small New-Yorker-style people who calmly review the artwork displayed on the walls. Resize your browser window and the artwork readjusts to fit the new dimensions.

Connection: Alison and I used to practice kung fu together.

Client: Portland SummerFest is an annual series of free operatic productions performed in beautiful outdoor settings. Presented in concert format with full orchestra and lively narration, these concerts have introduced thousands of Portlanders to the world of opera.

Project: Portland SummerFest needed a clean, professional-looking website to inform and educate a listening audience while attracting potential sponsors to her annual open-air music event. We created a colorful, reference-rich site showcasing the featured opera and the dedicated professionals who volunteer their talents to bring music to the masses.

Connection: Board Member Jocelyn Bates was dating--and is now married to--Patrick O'Brien, owner of O'Brien Constructors.
