3 Things That Large Nonprofits Do, That Smaller Nonprofits Should Copy
When every dollar counts, it's important to get your money's worth, and no one is better at stretching a dollar than nonprofits. When decision makers consider how nonprofits can get better at getting money, smaller nonprofits are often not at the table - primarily because they are smaller, and don't have time to commit to reading every article by every "expert" offering advice.
Today, we offer a faster way of getting you information to increase donations, create greater efficiencies, and increase retention among your staff AND your volunteers.
Donation/Efficiency Hack #1
Ask for the money
Treat your nonprofit like a business with a message, that's selling a world view. Basically, "This is the problem, and this is how we fix it." One of the first rules of sales is "Ask for the sale.". How you ask for the sale, aka, the donation, depends on a variety of factors, and you'll want to test to determine what messaging work best for which donors. But that said, every communication between a nonprofit and potential donor should include a call to action; a "give now" button, somewhere in the text. Make it obvious, without making it overly aggressive.
Bottom line: regular, consistent contact that contains a clear call to action, increases donations.
Donation/Efficiency Hack #2
Leverage the option of monthly donations through automatic draft
If you're not currently using a software able to do this, it's time for you to start. Both your current donors, as well as, new donors are much more likely to donate when the process is easy - so make it, easy. When it comes to making payments, automatic draft is particular of interest, as you only need to get your donor to say, "yes", once. After that, your payment processor does the rest. It's also helpful to suggest amounts, and if possible, give achievable examples of what their money, specifically, can do. People want to be part of a solution. People are often overwhelmed when only presented with the problem, and may feel as though their donation doesn't make much difference, resulting in them not making it.
Donation/Efficiency Hack #3
Use your software
Nonprofit professionals are often data ju**ies. As an active data ju**ie I proudly stand with you. If you want to get the best data, you'll need a way to track it, without bias; a hub where you can see how your marketing is performing, track your daily, weekly, monthly, (etc)- online donations, review how many active cases your group is balancing, and even, how individual programs are working. We, obviously, like this one: It's priced for nonprofits, has the functionality nonprofits use, and is on a familiar platform and integrates with the Microsoft solutions your team is currently using.
