A few years ago, choosing a language model came down to a simple rule: more parameters, better results. Today that benchmark no longer holds in every case.

Gartner predicts that by 2027, task-specific small models (SLMs) will be deployed three times more often than general-purpose LLMs. Instinctools' engineers mapped out where this shift is already playing out.

A few figures from the article:

👉 Phi-4-mini runs on just 4GB of RAM, while top-tier GPT, Claude, and Gemini models call for GPUs priced at $25,000–35,000.

👉 300 employees making five requests a day: roughly $720 a month on a frontier GPT model versus about $22.50 on Gemini Flash.

👉 Fine-tuning a large model drags on for months, a compact one for weeks. A project built on Mistral 7B took the team six weeks, lifting accuracy from 10% to 75%.

Large models keep their edge where deep reasoning and long context matter. But the question is moving away from "LLM or SLM" toward how to combine them: a large model coordinates, while lighter ones handle narrow tasks faster and cheaper.
