Awesome to see our work and other collaborative efforts in Utah be highlighted. Adam Sherlock, the community programs manager at SpyHop Productions, noted of these recent efforts to increase digital literacy an important change in discourse, “We talk so much about the digital divide, but it’s a nomenclature that we’re past now. It was a pre-smartphone time. (Digital inclusion) isn’t just having access to the tools, but the strategies to show people that you can actually do things with it.”

What is digital inclusion? Salt Lake City and other organizations in Utah are working to address the digital divide.

In 2011, Jennifer Holland founded the Google Community Leaders Program (CLP) after she visited New Orleans and recognized that many businesses and nonprofits had a significant technological gap in their operations. Google CLP was founded to bridge the digital divide in New Orleans by connecting the community with local student talent. Now there are 9 chapters of CLP around the nation bridging the digital divide in their communities. This is a picture of the Detroit/Ann Arbor CLP team teaching a class. We are grateful for all the students, volunteers, and community partners that make CLP possible!

This picture shows Pearl and Vickie during a recent blogging session at a Google Community Leaders Program class. Vickie has been attending classes for a few months now and has quickly learned many valuable skills. In her most recent blog post she wrote about what makes her happy: "I have a wonderful privilege to babysit my granddaughters. They make me laugh, surprise, and so loving towards me and other people. I really enjoy watching them." Vickie is an excellent student and is grateful for the Google volunteers that have taught her these valuable skills!

This is a picture of Kayla, one of our awesome Google CLP interns, teaching Bonnie, one of our senior students! Bonnie has been attending Google CLP classes for over a year and has learned many valuable computer skills. She has also learned how to use her tablet and is one of the happiest and funniest people you will meet. She is grateful for the Google interns/volunteers that have taught her these valuable skills. Meet Pearl Meacham! Pearl is 94 years old and is loved by all those who come in contact with her (especially her 70+ great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild). She has attended the Google Community Leaders Program classes for over a year and has learned various computer skills, most recently how to blog. In her most recent post, Pearl perfectly captures the holiday spirit with her favorite proverb: "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine."

Announcing Provo's newest blog, "It's a Wonderful Life"! After several weeks of learning basic computer skills, this senior group (ages 80-94) from the Mountain View Apartment Complex decided to launch a blog to highlight the many amazing things that have happened in their lives. "It's a Wonderful Life" will provide tremendous insight into living a happy and fulfilled life while also providing an opportunity for this group to learn the ins and outs of blogging. The Google Community Leaders Program will begin teaching classes Monday, October 5 and we need your help! We will be teaching basic computer skills and we need multiple volunteers to assist our students as they learn new technology. Volunteering to teach digital literacy classes doesn't require an extensive knowledge of computers, just a willingness to serve and teach basic skills. If you know how to use a mouse, write emails, and video chat friends, you have a better understanding than you realize! We are grateful for all of the Google CLP volunteers that helped out with Provo's Tech High Event today! The event was held for 7th-9th grade students to help get them interested in code. Thanks to Google Fiber, DevMountain, Coding Campus, and Provo City School District for putting on such a great event!
