The early web needed a better envelope. ✉️

Origins of the Internet, Episode 9 begins our TLS chapters with unencrypted HTTP and Netscape’s SSL. TLS developed from SSL 3 into an IETF standard, introducing technical changes along the way. SSL, TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 are obsolete. The postcard analogy concerns traffic visible on an unencrypted network path. HTTPS protects a connection; it doesn’t certify website honesty, and browser icons vary.

Before a room-by-room Wi-Fi comparison, check which network your phone currently shows as connected.

Open the phone’s Wi-Fi settings and privately compare that name with your intended home network. Don’t join or switch networks for this check.

Phones can reconnect to saved networks. A name in the available list isn’t necessarily the connected network. This observation adds context; it does not identify the cause of a slow result. Labels and menus vary by phone and software version.

A speed test measures a path, not just an internet plan.

Before interpreting your next result, note whether your usual VPN app or device settings show it as connected. Leave work VPN and security settings unchanged.

VPN routing can change which path traffic takes. Some configurations send only selected traffic through the tunnel, so a connected label does not prove that every app uses it. A result alone cannot identify the cause of a slowdown.

Origins of the Internet, Episode 8 closes our Linux chapters with servers, Android and supercomputers. Android uses a Linux-based kernel. In the June 2026 TOP500 list, Linux ran all 500 entries; that refers to the published ranked list, rather than every unranked machine. Linux’s reach is broad, while the internet uses many operating systems.

Connected, but missing an app alert?

For one app you already use, review its existing notification permission in your phone’s settings, following the current official instructions for your phone and OS version. Leave the settings unchanged.

A working internet connection is only one part of alert delivery. App and phone settings can affect what appears, sounds or arrives later. Controls and behavior vary by app, device and software version.

Smart-home schedule running at the wrong local time?

Your phone’s time zone and a device’s schedule may work differently. For one device you already use with a schedule, read the exact model’s current manufacturer time-zone guidance. Some devices keep the time zone set during setup, even after a phone or app-account change; behavior varies by product.

This is a documentation check before changing settings.

Origins of the Internet, Episode 7 explores Linux patches, public review and the development of Git in 2005. This is a short overview of a larger process involving subsystem maintainers, testing and multiple development trees. Torvalds coordinates mainline merging; he doesn’t personally review every proposed change.

Smart-home app not responding? Check the service behind it.

For one affected platform, find its official service-status page through the manufacturer’s support site, if available. If an incident is listed, read the affected features and update time before changing home-network settings.

Status updates can lag. A clear dashboard does not prove that your device or connection is healthy; it is one clue.

Who can use a smart-home app—and what can they do?

For one device you already own, review its existing shared-user list and access levels using the manufacturer’s current instructions. Some platforms separate viewing, control and settings permissions; roles vary by device, app version and account.

Make this a read-only check. Keep household names, email addresses and account details private.

Origins of the Internet, Episode 6 follows Linux’s 1992 move to the GPL and its combination with GNU components. The licensing shorthand in the video concerns redistributing covered software: source and license conditions apply to recipients. It doesn’t mean every private edit must be posted publicly.
