Montana Keeps Same Day Voter Registration
HELENA, Mont. — The Montana First Judicial District Court, Lewis and Clark County today issued an order ruling that Senate Bill 490, which passed during the 2025 Montana legislative session, is enjoined and may not go into effect. As a result, voters will not lose eight critical hours of voter registration on Election Day.

“This ruling is particularly important to rural Tribal communities across Montana,” said Jacqueline De Leon, senior staff attorney at NARF, “many of whom rely on the ability to register and cast a ballot on Election Day. Being able to register on Election Day is critical to ensuring full Indigenous participation in Montana’s electoral process.”

“The State of Montana could not provide a compelling government interest justifying this voter suppression law because there simply isn’t one,” said Alex Rate, deputy director/legal director at ACLU of Montana. “Election Day voter registration is secure, it’s fair, and — with this ruling — it continues to be protected in Montana.”

“Democracy works best when every eligible voter can participate freely,” said Theresa J. Lee, senior staff attorney with the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project. “Attempts to restrict access to Election Day registration disproportionately burden Native communities and undermine the promise of equal access to the ballot. This decision is a powerful reminder that the right to vote is not a privilege — it is a constitutional guarantee that belongs to all of us.”

This suit was brought by the ACLU of Montana, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Native American Rights Fund (NARF). Click here to learn more.

Additional plaintiff parties are represented by Graybill Law Firm, Elias Law Group, and Upper Seven Law.

East Side Fire

Custer Gallatin National Forest

May 1, 2026

https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/mtgnf-east-side-fire

Location: Approximately seven miles south of Red Lodge on Hwy 212 on the eastern side of East Side Road.

Start Date: 04/20/2026 Cause: under investigation Size: 1,219 acres Containment: 32%

Updates will now be less frequent, with information being shared as needed.

CURRENT SITUATION AND PLANNED ACTIONS

Fire crews continue to make progress in the area focusing on securing the edge of the fire line. They are surveying and identifying heat along the perimeter. Thanks to the recent snowmelt, we’ve been able to deploy an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) module to surveil the fire area. However, the melting snow has created slippery conditions in the steep and rugged terrain. Crew safety is our top priority. We will be utilizing the UAS module to keep crews out of hazardous areas until conditions allow safe access. Containment stands at 32%.

CLOSURES AND SPECIAL MESSAGES

A Forest Closure Order has been issued for the USFS lands around the fire. While this order is in place until July 15, it can be rescinded earlier if conditions allow.

East Side Road and Howell Gulch Road are open to local traffic only.

The U.S. Forest Service is in command with a mix of federal, state and local resources assigned.

An incident map can be found at carbonalert.org and Inciweb, Information on air quality can be found at fire.airnow.gov.
