You Get a Phone Call, Pop-Up, or Email Telling You There's a Problem With Your Computer
Often, scammers are behind these calls, pop-up messages, and emails. They want to get your money, personal information, or access to your files. This can harm your network, put your data at risk, and damage your business.

If you already let them in:
Revoke remote access (if unsure, restart your computer). That should cut the remote session and kick them out of your PC.
Change all your passwords. (Windows password, email, banking, etc.)
In some cases (i.e., you did not pay or called them names), scammers will seek revenge on your machine.
Scan your computer for malware. The miscreants may have installed password stealers or other Trojans to capture your keystrokes.

If you already paid:
Contact your financial institution/credit card company to reverse the charges and keep an eye out for future unwanted charges.
If you gave them personal information such as date of birth, Social Security Number, full address, name, and maiden name, you may want to consult the FTC’s website and report identity theft.

Maryland Tech Solutions provides a comprehensive remediation service for individuals who may not be at ease addressing such issues independently. Our expert team conducts thorough scans to detect and eliminate any malware present on your system. We also take care of uninstalling any remote software or backdoors that scammers may have installed, offering guidance on essential steps to safeguard your online accounts and identity. Additionally, if necessary, we can install advanced anti-malware software to enhance your system's security. If you require assistance, feel free to reach out to us at 410-575-3006

Here are simple things you can do to protect your website usernames and passwords from being compromised.

- Strong passwords. It's not the complexity as much as the length of your passwords and pin numbers that make them more secure. Try using passphrases instead of random passwords. They are longer which makes them harder to crack and are easier for you to remember.

- Do not use the same password for everything. If someone gets a hold of it they will have access to all of your accounts.

- Avoid using obvious password that include important dates, addresses, pets names, and names of family members. These are the ones that are the easiest to hack if someone knows a little bit of your personal information.

- Enable two step or two factor authentication using sms. This means when you log into a site for the first time from a new device, a code will be sent to your cell phone that you will have to enter to proceed. This means the bad guys will need access to your phone even if they do manage to get your password.

- DO NOT save usernames and passwords in your browser. This is the easiest way bad guys get your passwords once they get access to your device through malware or other means.

- Use a password manager such as LastPass. All of your passwords are safeguarded using strong encryption and you only have to remember one password. They also have an app for iOS and Android devices. Fingerprint and two factor authentication options are available in this app for added security. I can crack a password protected spreadsheet with an 8 character code in less than 10 seconds, so they are no good either. Regular old pen and paper are also a good option!

- I know it's alot of work. Lol. If you see what we do everyday, trust me it's worth the extra effort. You may not have been a victim yet but you definitely could be if you don't take extra precautions to protect yourself.

The Meltdown and Spector exploits are some of the worst I can remember. What makes them unique is the vunerabilites reside within the hardware, not the operating system. AMD systems in particular are being adversely affected by the security patches released by Microsoft to combat this issue. I have seen a few computers within week that were impacted and the update had to be manually removed to restore normal operation. All you need to know now regarding this latest threat you can find by clicking the link below.

Meltdown and Spectre exploit critical vulnerabilities in modern processors. These hardware vulnerabilities allow programs to steal data which is currently processed on the computer. While programs are typically not permitted to read data from other programs, a malicious program can exploit Meltdown...
