WILL WIRELESS SPECTRUM AUCTION END DUOPOLY DEBATE?
FCC’s approval of upcoming incentive auction, which will free up wireless spectrum in the 600MHz band from TV broadcasters, may not end the debate whether a duopoly exists between wireless titans AT&T and Verizon but may cure the insatiable appetite of data. “The auction, which calls on TV broadcasters to voluntarily give up spectrum for a split of the proceeds from the auction, is slated to begin sometime next year,” writes CNET, Maggie Reardon. Should FCC impose auction rules to limit the amount of spectrum AT&T and Verizon can acquire, which combine “account for roughly 70 percent of the revenue in the wireless industry and owns 45 percent of the spectrum in the two major wireless bands below 1GHz” writes Reardon. http://ow.ly/lMjob
