When your control interface is already constrained by panel depth, PCB space, or enclosure geometry, the encoder shaft can become a mechanical integration problem.

In audio-visual equipment, communications equipment, appliances, radios and musical instrumentation, designers still need precise rotational input for level control, tuning and timer settings, along with consistent user feel and long-term reliability.

Bourns has expanded its PEC11S Series 12 mm SMD Incremental Encoder Series with a new 25 mm shaft length option, available in both switched and switchless configurations.

The series provides:

• 2-bit quadrature output
• 15 PPR resolution
• 15,000-cycle minimum rotational life
• 100 ±70 gf·cm detent torque
• Metal shaft and bushing construction
• Surface mount design
• Operating temperature range of -40°C to +70°C

When integrating user controls into a compact communications or instrumentation platform, what drives your encoder selection priority: shaft configuration flexibility, tactile feel, or service life?

Last week, Bourns employees had the chance to relax, connect, and create some beautiful artwork during our Canvas & Connect Pour Painting event.

Led by accomplished muralist, live painter, and portrait artist Mary Harris (Art Music Maryjane), the workshop began with participants creating a “personal base layer” with words, symbols, portraits or abstract painting.

Next, each personal base layer was transformed with a “collaborative acrylic pour,” using colors contributed by the entire group.

The idea behind the workshop was simple but meaningful: parts of our stories may become hidden, but they continue to shape who we are.

Employees also learned acrylic painting techniques, took part in guided reflection and group discussion, and of course, left with a completed layered artwork to take home.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this colorful afternoon of creativity, reflection, and connection!

In hybrid and electric powertrain systems, intermittent BMS communication or switching-related bit errors can point to a signal path that needs stronger isolation and noise rejection. But added filtering can further complicate an already tight layout and automotive qualification process.

The right BMS signal transformer with integrated common mode choke functionality can help address all of these challenges in one purpose-built component.

The new Bourns Model SM91534ALA BMS Signal Transformer is designed specifically for high-voltage isolation and noise rejection in automotive and energy storage BMS applications. It features:

• 1,500 VDC working voltage
• 6,400 VDC Hi-Pot rating
• 12 kV impulse voltage rating
• Reinforced insulation certified to IEC62477-1:2022 and IEC62368-1:2018
• Creepage and clearance distance >16.6 mm
• AEC-Q200 compliance
• Operating temperature range of -40 °C to +125 °C

B is for Bourns. B a Leader.

As the VP of Products & Technology in our Sensors Division, Antonio Galvan has a seasoned view of what leadership entails. He sees it as something demonstrated through action, encouragement, and accountability.

“Lead by example,” Antonio shared. “No one does what they hear; they do what they see.”

Antonio also believes effective leadership means recognizing the people behind the work: “Never forget you deal with people,” he said. “Treat them as you want to be treated.”

Leadership is also about taking the next step, even if you’re unsure. In fact, Antonio says he has experienced uncertainty in every leadership role he’s taken on thus far. His approach is to step forward, identify areas for growth, ask for advice, and surround himself with the right talent.

“If you always wait to take on a challenge until you feel you’re 100% ready, you will never take it on,” Antonio said.

What leadership lesson has stayed with you throughout your career?

If your current sense resistor adds too much loss, heat or drift, your BMS measurement accuracy can pay the price.

In high-current battery management systems, ultra-low resistance values can help reduce power dissipation. But the resistor still needs to support stable measurement under load, temperature, and switching stress.

Bourns is happy to share that our CSS2H-5930 and CSI2H-5930 Series current sense resistors now offer a 0.1 mΩ resistance value for current sensing applications.

The expanded series provides:

✚ Power rating 15 W at 70°C
✚ Operating temperature range of -55 °C to +170°C
✚ Low inductance: < 3 nH for material type R and < 5 nH for material type K
✚ Low TCR and low thermal EMF
✚ Electron-beam-welded metal strip design
✚ AEC-Q200 compliance and automotive-grade qualification (CSS2H-5930 models)

When high current is part of the design, what tends to drive your sensing decisions first: power loss, thermal performance or measurement stability?

Protecting UPS Uptime Across Every Circuit Stage⚡

In a double-conversion online UPS, your component selection has to account for the power path, battery circuitry, auxiliary power, and protected interfaces.

And since each area presents different electrical stresses, sensing, switching, and protection requirements, choosing the best protection options across the board can begin to feel a little like whack-a-mole.

Our “Protection & Power Conversion Solutions for Uninterruptible Power Supplies” brochure highlights component options for each stage of UPS design, including:

• Varistors, GDTs, IsoMOV® Hybrid Protectors and POWrFuse™ high-power fuses for power protection
• SiC Schottky diodes, IGBTs, rectifier diodes and power resistors for high power conversion and battery circuits
• TVS diodes, MLVs, current sense resistors, resettable fuses and Trimpot® trimming potentiometers for auxiliary power
• TVS diode arrays, TBU® HSPs, GDTs and ChipGuard® ESD protectors for interface protection
