That was the reality for a regional healthcare provider we recently partnered with. Q: Our UPS passes its regular maintenance checks. Isn't that enough?
“Maintenance checks confirm the unit is operating. They don't confirm it will perform under a real outage scenario. A load bank test simulates actual demand on the system, batteries, inverters, and transfer switches included, so you see how the unit behaves under stress, not just at idle.”

Q: So how often should that kind of test happen?
“For most critical facilities, we recommend a full load bank test annually, with battery impedance testing on a more frequent cycle, especially once a UPS passes the 8 to 10 year mark. Systems degrade quietly. Impedance can trend upward for months before it shows up anywhere else.”

Q: What's the biggest mistake you see facilities make?
“Assuming redundancy equals reliability. Having a second system in place is not the same as knowing that system will actually take over cleanly when the first one fails. That confidence only comes from testing.”

When engineers talk about "N+1" or "2N" redundancy, they're describing exactly how much backup capacity a system has beyond what it needs to run.

▪️N means just enough capacity to meet demand, with zero backup
▪️N+1 means one extra unit beyond what's needed, so a single failure doesn't take the system down
▪️2N means a fully mirrored, independent backup system, twice the capacity actually required

Here's the fun fact part: most facilities think they have 2N redundancy. Far fewer have actually tested it. On paper, 2N looks bulletproof. In practice, it only works if every failover path has been validated under real load.

That gap between "designed as 2N" and "proven as 2N" is exactly where our name comes from. Redundancy is in our name, and it's also in our testing process, not just our equipment specs.
