AIO or custom loop: what does water cooling actually cost?

An AIO is the cheapest, simplest way to water cool a CPU. Pump, block and radiator come in one sealed unit, it installs like an air cooler, and ours start at $39.99.

A custom loop built from parts starts around $316 for a CPU loop, every part in stock: a HEATKILLER IV BASIC block, an Alphacool NexXxoS ST30 360mm radiator, an Eisstation DDC pump and reservoir, 16/10mm tubing, six compression fittings and a liter of ModWater. Add a current-gen GPU block and it comes to about $576.

The loop costs more, and in return it cools your graphics card, lets you pick every part, and grows with your build.

Want the middle ground? Alphacool Eisbaer AIOs have a quick-lock on one hose, so you can add a GPU block or another radiator later.

D5 or DDC: which water cooling pump should you buy?

Pick a D5 for most loops. It's bigger, quiet at normal speeds and moves plenty of coolant, and it's the usual pick with a tube reservoir.

Pick a DDC when space is tight. It's much smaller and pushes harder through restrictive loops, but it runs warmer, so give it airflow.

One thing to check either way: tops are not interchangeable. A D5 goes in a D5 top and a DDC goes in a DDC top, and the same goes for reservoirs with a pump mount.

Our guide also covers the pumps we stock and pump and reservoir combos, where the pump sits in the bottom of the reservoir so it's one part to mount.

D5 NEXT RGB: a D5 pump with its own controller on board. OLED display, water temperature sensor, a PWM fan output and RGBpx lighting, and you can run it from its own buttons without a PC connected.

Putting an RTX 5080 under water? The block has to match your exact card, not just the chip, because every board layout is different.

If your card is an MSI Ventus 3X OC or Shadow 3X OC, or an Inno3D X3 or iChill X3, the one that fits is the Alphacool Core RTX 5080/5070 Ti Reference: chrome-plated copper, aRGB lighting, and an aluminum backplate included.

Different card? Our RTX 5080 water block page has a fitment table: find your card's brand and model, and it shows the block that fits it, from ASUS Prime, TUF and ROG Astral OC to Gigabyte AORUS Master, MSI Suprim and Gaming Trio, PNY, Palit, Gainward and Zotac. Most of the same blocks fit RTX 5070 Ti cards too. Every block in the table links to its product page.

How many fittings does a custom loop need? Two per component. Every block, radiator and pump/reservoir has an inlet and an outlet, and each one takes a compression fitting.

A CPU loop (CPU block, one radiator, pump/res combo) needs 6. Add a GPU block and it's 8. A second radiator makes 10, and a separate pump and reservoir makes 12.
