Maple sap isn't the only thing running this time of year! Glass eels are also running through our rivers and the elver fishermen are out in force. Fetching over 2000$ a pound, it is Maine's third largest fishery after lobsters and soft shell clams, which is even more impressive given the short season of only two months. American eels are extremely hardy fish, able to thrive in fresh and salt water, a range of temperatures and other water parameters like oxygen and pH, making them an ideal species for aquaculture. Let's celebrate our coastal heritage by supporting our fishermen out day and night in freezing temperatures and innovative companies that are growing these eels locally to market size.
